I'm right now looking at the FW IA:13 Renegade Army and really like it, but am really confused one what models to buy first! I know I should start off with a HQ and 2 troops. I'm also a bit confused on how Renegade Infantry Platoons work. Does one platoon count as a troops choice or one squad?

One platoon counts as a troops choice. So 60 renegade infanty minimum for 2 troops if going for platoons.

But before you think about troops you need to consider your HQ, because with renegades this influences your army more than any other force.
Do you want to flood the board with a mass of bodies that keeps replacing itself when units get killed? Then go for a Master of the Horde.
Want army wide fnp (6+)? Heretek Magus is for you.
Want elite renegades with snazzy equipment? Then it's Bloody-Handed Reaver.
If you want a mutant army with spawn and giant spawn and an upgraded HQ, then it is Mutant Overlord.
The covenants of chaos also affect your army build, unlocking various units. My personal favourite is cov of tzeentch as this unlocks 3 units of spawn (4 with mutant overlord), and gives the unit he joins snaoshots at bs2. Remember the arch demagogue can leave his disciples and join another unit. Khorne unlocks Bloodslaughterers which will benefit a melee focussed army, Nurgle unlocks zombies and blight drones which are both great. Whilst slaanesh allows for slaaneshy CSM units.
The real strength of the dex is its Heavy Support choices qhoch are almost unanimously undercosted. So check out what you want from there. For troops I personally take 4 units of 55pt spawn and 2 mutant rabbles which is exceptionally cheap at 280pts for 6 troops choices, 4 of which have 9 t5 wounds and beast.
Another advantage I've been considering recently is that renegades can spam flamers for dirt cheap better than anyone else, so a promethian pipe relay could be almost broken in tye right renegade list.
If going master of the horde you can take 30 renegades with 5 special weapons, 3 heavies and a sigil so they auto pass the first ld test every turn. Give them militia training and cov of tzeentch and they become far more dangerous than equivalent guard blobs. Plus if they die they will come back on a 5+. Sentinals are dirt cheap if you take them with heavy flamers or rocket pods (as these don't care about their bs2), whilst chimeras can be given a hf and kept at 10pts cheaper than the guard equivalent rather than upgrading to militia training.
In HS there are cheaper wyverns, dirt cheap earthshakers, quad launchers, heavy mortars, laser destroyers, medusas, griffons, and the HWS are cheaper than the guard equivalent, can be taken in 6's which is perfect for a bunker, and can be given cov of tzeentch for better flyer/invis shooting.

Hope this helps.

Personally I'd buy the Cadian defense force if you want a quick game. Because rather than using platoons, you could use infantry veteran squads, which only need ten men in them.

But yes, you have one platoon with several squads in it. One of them is a command squad but it is all one troop choice.

I've just started a Renegade army myself. I'm thinking about starting with a Command Squad with the Bloody-Handed Reaver, two Veteran Squads upgraded to Grenadiers and all three squads in Chimeras. I can play it solo at 500 or use them as allies for my Chaos Marines (probably more likely)

The only problem with that is that the arch demagogue has to be the warlord in order to be upgraded to bloody handed reaver, same for all of the upgrades.

He has? Good for pointing that out, guess I'll have to rewrite my list (probably throw the Chaos Marines as allies or some other detachment)

My renegades are doing really well in my meta, five matches and only victories (but I didn´t had to face heavy flyer lists until now)
Renegades are fun but you have to paint masses to have an effective list IMO

Ironically, renegades is the army that requires the MOST planning, and is the least "just get stuff over time and it'll stack up" army, because there is just so many choices that shape the entire codex in terms of what you can and cannot do.

Basic infantry are always needed, but militant/cultist types? vets/scion types or mutant rabbles? three whole CLASSES of troops! some classes have multiple choices in them!

Then you got yourself a handful of god-spesific units, and a handful of devotion-spesific units.

The only way I see is to start with choosing the god (or no god) you want to follow, and the devotion you want your arch-heretic to have, as they will make the entire rest of the army shape up by them.

After that, you got a few units that are always good by virtue of cheapness, like the various artillery units in HS (especially the cheap non-tank ones), and the flamer/rocketpod sentinals in FA, as these work great without BS3 upgrade.
Does not work of "bloody handed reaver" though, as he's forced to get them training, making them % far more expensive for little to no gain. (non-reaver flame sentinal is mere 20 points! that's a STEAL! I'd take 10 of them in any other codex. at least.)

can neither confirm nor deny I lost track of what I've got right now.

Yeah, the most important part of the whole army is the arch demagogue. Bloody handed reaver means that you will be running a imperial guard knock off list. Master of the horse means that you can literrally drown the table in bodies., I once wrote up a joke 2000 point list with 600 models in it. Sure they were all armed with lasguns, but it would still be utterly ridiculous.

Personally, I love covenant of tzeentch and master of mutants. Just because renegade spawn are incredibly cheap and mutants make excellent bullet catchers.

*bursts though room with axe* HEEEAAARRRS JHONNY!!!

Ok few questions with the Renegades...

I wish to use them as allies with CSM, as I want some of the tanks and barrage they bring, now what should I bring as there is a large majority of Eldar players in my area and I wish to know what would be good renegade allies with them?
