Hi everyone,

Just wondering, as the title says, what is your favourite part about painting? (besides, of course, sitting back at the end of it and going 'oh yeah, I painted that!')

For me, it's watching my piece of paper towel grow more and more colourful as I clean my brush - that, and seeing the piece of paper I use to protect my desk change colour ever so slightly with each batch of figures I paint.

How about you? What strange, simple, or just plain ordinary thing do you like best about painting?

I like doing the final highlights on any part of the model. Shadowing though too, basically everything after the base-coating I enjoy.

I like watching the shapes that form in pigment on the surface of my cup of water.

My absolute favorite bit is looking at a fully-painted army and feeling accomplished.

Definitely washes and dry brushing, they take something dull and really give it life and the grim dark feel.

The best bit for me is looking at the model you've just finished sat next to one that only has the spray paint and being amazed at the transformation

Seeing it come together, step by step....the more that gets done, the more excoted i get. By the time of final touches, I'm like a kid whopped up on sugars!! Love seeing as the back of my hand and thumb/first finger nails become more and more covered in paint strikes.

I like how the model looks just after I primed it. So clean and ready to be anything.

Also getting eyes right, that's a little fist-pump moment.

For me, it is watching my models come to life little by little as I add different details and colors. Especially vehicles.

I really don't like painting, so really nothing. But if I had to choose, definitely the washing or basecoating

Putting on the final varnish. After I have that on, the model is as finished as it'll be and it's time to move onto the next project.

The moment when I realize the ol' brush I've been using has just hit the point where it's bad enough that it needs to go into the 'retirement drawer.'

If nobody's looking, I give it a little salute.

Painting is by far my least favorite part of the hobby. So finishing a model and not having to paint it anymore is my favorite lol.

That magic moment when you come back to a mini you've just hit with Agrax/Nuln, and it's gone from blocked colours to looking real in just one coat.

Although it happens with all washes. I agree it’s one of the high points in my painting as well. You go from “cartoony” to “realistic” in one easy step.

Getting the eyes just right is a miracle that’s great when it happens.

My favourite bit is that mpment where the paintjob goes from looking a bit flat to pulling all together, depending on the model this could be the moment when I put on a final touch of highlights, put a wash to blend two colours in, or more often than not when I finish the face on a bare headed marine. Its that moment between questioning if its what you see in your mind is ever gonna form, and seeing it come to life.

On every model I have done, there is always a moment when the model goes from looking bland and unsatisfying to looking great. The odd thing is, it isn't always at the same step (even on the same type of model). For example, sometimes it's after I add the gold trim to the armor, other times it's not until all of the purity seals are done. Each model kind of comes to life at some point in the process and I love it when that happens. It's just tempting to stop painting there, even when I know there are other details to finish.

It's an amazing "whole is bigger than the sum of the parts" moment that usually catches me off guard. It's what keeps me coming back, though!

I really enjoy the detailing aspect like dry brushing and shadowing. They make a dull model look alive.

lol, that is me exactly. My least favorite parts are prep, prime, and basecoat. After that, I love everything equally

I love applying transfers/decals. I hated it for years but after i mastered them (thanks to micro sol and micro set) they are now one of my favourite steps.
I also love adding details like grass tufts and barb wire to bases.

Honestly, I hate the process of painting. There is a certain "Zen" that comes from just turning on the music and tuning everything else out while you focus on a pinpoint, although it's not enough to overcome the tediom I feel about it. That being said, the payoff at the end is what it's really about, and what overcomes all of that. Other than the end, I like the planning process. Figuring out the color scheme and how you are going to achieve it. So I guess the beginning and the end is great and everything else in the middle sucks
