hi guys,
im new and want to play tau (cause robot things look cool) but i have no idea where to start.
could someone please suggest a good hq to start with and perhaps some solid ideas for around a 500 point army.

any design ideas would be appreciated too (colour schemes etc)

Riptide

Tips-
Riptides are your best unit. Take as many as possible. You also needs lots of markerlights.

Warning - As the writer above states, the Riptide is very, very good - Some maintain that it is broken, and has a negative influence on the game. Keep this in mind: If you plan on playing with some friends in a relaxed envoirment, one Riptide, or maybe non at all, will be the best option, simply because it can be quite a tough nut for unexperienced players, and especially at 500 pt. If your envoirment is competetive, it's definately great, though.

I'd personally recommend at least one squad of Crisis Suits with whatever weapons you feel like having, and Kroot are great, simply for being cheap and easy to move around the table.

I'm not gonna tell you how to paint them as it's your army. I personally like this theme however:



A good HQ to start would be Cadre Fireblade.

I wouldn't field a Riptide at 500 points, it's considered cheesy (ie, broken) or could just be too much at that point's level. It is however, one of Tau's best units.

I would start with something like this:

Cadre Fireblade 60
12x Fire Warriors 108
10x Kroot 60
Crisis Suit w/ 2x Fusion Blasters 52
Crisis Suit w/ 2x Fusion Blasters 52
Crisis Suit w/ 2x Fusion Blasters 52
5x Pathfinders 55
5x Pathfinders 55

That should give you an idea of whether you prefer gunline or mobile Tau.

I'm surprised you didn't go with Necrons, they are exemplars of robots!

A hq to start with is ethereal. Get one box of fire warriors, put into two squads of six and then it entirely depends on what you want. If you want a fast, manuvorable force, take crisis suits and piranhas, if you want a list with da big guns take a riptide and/or broadsides.

I just moved interstate, my current meta is Eldar guy who never plays and now Saintblash.
We may join a local gaming club soon though.
