I'm working on a 13th Black Crusade army and I want to add in a squad of Alpha Legion. I imagine they have been running covert ops and vanguard missions before meeting up with the main crusade force.

From what I've read contemporary Alpha Legion operate in small, elite units and pride themselves in excelling at marine on marine conflicts.

What I am struggling with is what visual cues do Alpha Legion have to differentiate themselves from the other traitor legions? Do they have any preference as to helmet ornamentation? Having spent most of the long war in real space I can imagine the legionnaires armour to be far less warptainted than there EoT peers.

The only thing I can find is their colour scheme and a propensity for scale details on their armour. I'm ignoring the Black Legion fluff that states any marine that pledges himself to Abaddon sears his armour black, so I guess I am asking for painting and modelling tips for a small squad of 40k Alpha Legionnaires.

There are a few things that can work:

- Mix in some 'cleaner' normal SM parts if you can get them. Obviously nothing newer than MkVI, but something not covered in skulls or spikes. The current Tactical squad has a few pieces like this (1 set of MkIV legs, 2 of VI legs, some torsos).

- Load them up with pouches/extra ammo/combat knives ect, all the stuff forward operatives would need if they were cut off.

- The Hydra is the emblem of the legion, and the Dark Elf Corsairs kit from WFB has a few parts that could fit. Stick them on sword hits, guns, even a head crest and it'll add a visual identifer.

- Have some of the armour fading from black to blue or green towards the edges, like the traditional scheme.
