I'll break this down into a few scenarios so we can distill the perfect D-lord wargear loadout:

How to build him with:

1) An Orikanstar. (I.E. Zandrekh, Orikan, OL with resorb and veil, Sword and Board Lychguard, Dlord)

2) To accompany a Wraith, Praetorian or Flayed Ones unit.

3) To attach to another D-lord, or other uses.

Aaaaaand go!

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

Nightmare shroud, phase shifter, warscythe.

That's how I run him, insanely durable under 200pts usually have him riding with wraiths or praets. If you have him tanking wounds then you could argue for the iwnd but usually the squad of wraiths tank for him so he's not damaged for the first couple turns so iwnd has limited return.

Either Veil or Shroud, Scythe, Shifter, Phylactery, and Gauntlet. All that totals to an awesome HQ.

I mean, if you think about it, at T6 W3 2+/4++/RP, he's basically a Dreadknight, but trading Jump for Jet and without the Shunt move. I occasionally run him solo without a unit, just because putting him down is so difficult for certain armies.

Of course, running him with a bodyguard and/or Orikan is fantastic as well, and against certain armies, necessary.

That's a decent comparison i didn't think about. He just doesn't have good ranged weapons.

I think warscythe and phase shifter are 'must takes' for any version of Destroyer Lord. Then if there's points I'd give him Nightmare Shroud. Anything more than that is too many points IMO.

Mostly because the Nightmare Shroud is so horrendously overpriced.

Frankly I'd rather take a relic I can use in full, rather than one with a bunch of useless powers tacked on to a 2+ to artificially inflate the price.

Yeah, I generally end up just using Destroyers as his retinue, just so he can move at his regular pace and still have a solid shooting attack. Splitting him off to hit a juicy squad when the opportunity arises (a recently drop podded Tactical squad, for example).

Warscythe/Phase are the obvious choices. My favored upgrades are actually giving him Voidreaper over Nightmare (just a sick amount of rerolls with PE + Mastercrafted), and if I can spare it, Phylactery. The Relic Gauntlet gives him nifty shooting, but is too expensive for a one-off that he sometimes won't even be able to get in range for with just 6" move.

I've pointed it out before but Destroyer Lords are also a way to almost do a complete Null Deployment for a Beta Strike list.

Destroyer Lord w/ Orb of Eternity, Res Orb, Warscythe, Phase Shifter. Non Decurion

Decurion - Destroyer Lord w/ Res Orb, Phase Shifter , Warscythe.

5 Flyrants cannot kill this guy with shooting even if you do manage to charge him he can still pop the 2nd Res Orb.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

Phase Shifter

Attach to a blob of Warriors or something else shooty to confer PE.

Unless attaching to a unit of Wraiths, in which case upgrade to a Warscythe, maybe even the fancy one, and lose the Res Orb (unless running Canoptek Harvest)

One things for sure IMO, attaching him to a unit of Destroyers isn't really doing anything for your army list. Destroyers already have PE, and if you're trying to get them in CC, you're doing it wrong.
