Hey everyone, I have a competitive match coming up with a friend who plays Tau. I haven't faced him before with my GKs so I was just wondering about some general advice and any tips that would help me out. We are going in blind so I don't know exactly what he'll bring but we have discussed we would be bringing Take All Comers lists as to not tailor to the other player. I'm generally worried about EWO riptides mostly for when i come from DS.

Any comments would be great, thanks.

Well I'm going pure Grey Knights with a nemesis strike force, so I'm limited to 2 HS in the detachment which is all I have haha

Be as aggressive as possible and get in his face. Be sure there's some line of sight blocking terrain or something to at least provide cover after you deep strike. Use Dreadknights to move to his front lines and prevent his riptides from having anywhere to run, terminators to deepstrike behind and in between his units. Use Heavy Incinerators to knock out any infantry he has in cover, especially pathfinders. Use Cleansing Flame and Sanctuary on all the units that have it. And dont forget to active force weapons before combat.

That's the best general advice I can give you.

I mean what point level? I got a list specifically for Tau/Necrons.

HQ: Libby
Troop: Termie Squad, Termie Squad
Fast Attack: Interceptor, Interceptor
Heavy Support: Dreadknight, Dreadknight

Just remember the rules, Incinerators on PA, Teleport Homers on Interceptor, don't run NSF, a hammer for every 5 men.

2000 points, all Power armor have incinerators, termies and paladins have psycannons. Both Dreadknights are heavy incinerator/pyscannon

There will be lots of terrain including LOS blocking

Tau players just have to accept the reality that the pie plate of DOOM is awesome vs infantry, but sucks bad against MCs. They'll have to build their lists to address this reality, just as my BA have to address the fact that fast Vindis are worthless vs MCs.

Psychic Schriek is also very powerful against Tau ld. Use it on his riptides.

Yes, flamer templates are good against pathfinders...too bad no Tau player worth his salt takes them anymore. He's likely to either have a bunch of BS5 marker drones with a commander or a bunch of Tetras; both with some Skyray Support. If his marker support is properly diffused, it's going to be tough to eliminate.

Do your NDK's have personal teleporters? It's expensive but essential against him. You need it to pressure him, keep him off objectives and to get in schriek range.

Lastly, invisibility always kicks me in the bum. Tau have virtually no psychic D unless he takes allies. I'd load up on psychic output; invis some paladins to control the mid-board, full court press with 2 NDKs and use the rest to sit on home obj's.

Rule #1 is Look Cool.

GKI and NDK with a T1 shunt will flame Tau infantry.

Psychic Shriek is also a good strategy. Plus, if you get Invisibility it will make the Riptide templates useless.

If you're worried about EWOs, consider starting on the table. Grey Knights have the ability to start either on table and move up the field (with Draigo's Gate, and Personal Teleporters), or start off the field with DS.

Here's my list, which generally does very well against Tau.
2 Libbys, both PML3. Roll on Telepathy until you get Invisibility, then roll on Sanctic for Sanctuary.
Draigo. Gate, as well as S7 AP2 and a 3++. Expensive, and worth it.
5-7 Termies (not Paladins), a psycannon, some hammers. Libbys and Draigo go here. The unit starts on-table, to Gate T1
5-10 GKI, two incinerators. One or two units of 5, each with an incinerator and a hammer. If they're Deep Striking, I will put a Libby with them. He can split off and join the Termies on the following turn.
2 NDKs, one with incin/psycan, one with psilen/psycan, both with teleporters and Force weapons.

This isn't 2000pts, so add some stuff to hold the backfield, like a small Purf squad--two psycannons, and will get you 2WC. Or a LRC for the Termies. Or drop in some Inquisitional Allies.
A Xenos Inq with all the grenades and the Heresius relic lets you hit even harder in combat, and Scout with the Termies. Plus, some min-squads of 2Acolyes+1Psyker will get you a few more cheapo WC. They can easily hide out of LoS and hold an objective. Heck, you might even roll Invisibility and be able to hand it to a DK.

T1, you can shunt forward with GKI and DKs, as well as Gate DraigoTermies into his face. Flame a FW squad for 1st Blood, and you then have 4-5 threats that are in charge range for T2, ALL of which he has to kill if he doesn't want to die. Interceptors can kill infantry (with flamers and melee) or vehicles (with hammer and HH); DKnights can kill everything; Draigoball can tackle some Broadsides or a Ripper, or multiassault several units.
