Here's my project log for my Genestealer Cult. My pics are elsewhere on dakkadakka too, but I wanted to make a properly named and organized thread. I picked a 'Stealer Cult because it gives me an opportunity to make a lot of weird conversions, and use some extreme paint schemes and techniques. I've been severely ill for a long time, and have been unable to play games. In the last couple of weeks my health has become better, I hope and pray that I will recover and actually get out and play again.

WIP pic: Mucolid Spore and Leman Russ Punisher

WIP pic: Carnifex (Magnetized)

These are my current goals: (updated 3/24 2015)

Cultists counting as Astra Militarum:

Company Command squad (Vox Caster, Medi-kit, Astropath, Carapace armour)
ROLE: Stay alive by hiding behind the main blob. Give Orders, use the long-ranged Telepathy powers to be a pain in the rear.

Platoon Command Squad (Vox Caster, 2 Grenade Launchers, Medi-kit, rides in Chimera 1)
ROLE: Give Orders from the safety of the Chimera

Officer of the Fleet (Finished)

1 Primaris Psyker (Force Staff) (Finished)
Role: Join the main blob

1 Preacher (Finished)

4 Infantry squads (4 Autocannons, 4 Grenade Launchers, 1 Vox Caster, Sergeants will be magnetized so that they can be equipped with Laspistols or Boltguns).
ROLE: This is the Main Blob. It'll try to take Objectives while having its firepower boosted by Prescience (from the Primaris Psyker) and Orders,

2 Leman Russ Battle Tanks (Each with a Heavy Bolter). I bought these second-hand, so their weapons are glued in place. ROLE: Serve as long-range anti-MEQ firepower.

1 Leman Russ, magnetized (kan være Executioner eller Punisher)
ROLE: Depends on weapon loadout

1 Wyvern
ROLE: Pummel infantry with giddy abandon

1 Hellhound
ROLE: This dog will only get to fight if I'm playing against MEQs. I doubt it'll survive a battle -it's scary and fast. Hopefully it'll soak up a lot of Lascannon shots before catching fire.

2 Vendettas
ROLE: Anti-tank

Tyranid Allies:

5 Genestealers + Broodlord
ROLE: Stay in cover and use The Horror.

Winged Hive Tyrant (Magnetized)
ROLE: Anti-infantry

Carnifex
(Magnetized)
ROLE: Deep Strike inside the Tyrannocyte and rip tanks apart

Tyrannocyte ROLE: Eat the Carnifex, fall down, poop it back out

For smaller games:
Deathleaper I'll have to scratch-build this girl, the original looks a bit crappy.

1 Lictor

RUST TURORIAL

I was really happy about how the rust on the tanks turned out. If you would like to learn the technique, here's a little tutorial:

The rust was painted in the following way:
1: First the metal was given a wash of Agrax Earthshade (Citadel)
2: Spots and stripes were made with several layers of Carroburg Crimson (Citadel)
3: A couple of layers of Bloodletter (Citadel), slightly bigger than the carroburg crimson spots
4: I then used an old brush to apply nasty, crusty spots of Rust Effect (Modelmates)
5: Finally I drybrushed the crust of the Rust Effect spots with Ryza Rust (Citadel), and added streaks of watered down ryza rust to the rust stripes.

The trick is to remember that rust will form where water will flow and pool, especially around rivets.

The list seems a little op both thematically and in game terms to me. Obviously this will depend on your local meta game when you get one.
I think that the guard element is too well equipped for craaaazy cultists with 2 vendettas, 3 Russ, wyvern and the Tyranid element is too MC heavy, I'd stick to vanguard organisms and can't really see a Tyrant operating at that level.
Just my 2 cents.

Oli: Can I be an orc?
Everyone: No.
Oli: But it fits through the doors, Look!

Preachers are great -I love big Fearless infantry blobs. This guy was was extremely easy to convert. I added a cultist autogun and some Dark Eldar chains, and gave him a big Green Stuff head. The original miniature can be found here:

They look awesome and I love how over the top the colour scheme is.

I'd happily play against this, although if it were me I'd include more genestealers in the list even though they are not optimal.

Nerazim> Thanks! I gotta update my army list, as I bought the Dathwatch: Overkill box and intend to use the genestealer cult formation in the box. The AM and genestealer cult elements will not like eachother as allies ("Come the apocalypse", but I don't really worry about that.

Honestly with such a cool theme and nicely painted models I wouldn't have a problem letting you overlook the ally rules, especially if you are not doing it for cheese!

Especially loving the patterns on the Carnifex btw, really nicely done.

Edit: Did you see these "Genestealer Limos" ?

Love those rust bucket tanks! The streaks look awesome. Can't wait to see you add the DW:O models to this force - hopefully we'll see an update from you soon :-)

Bye bye Dakkadakka, happy hobbying! I really enjoyed my time on here. Opinions were always my own :-)

Excellent all around. I love your hybrids.

As per the comment about the cultists being too-well equipped, I'd counter that with the ability to covertly and precisely, or aggressively and quickly infiltrate an organization as they see fit, it would be perfectly reasonable that some well equipped tanks might disappear on patrols or go missing from the motorpool, or that an entire company of tankers were brought into the fold.

But considering the 'Fex and Tyrannocyte, Tyrant, Lictor: This is a cult manifestation in its advanced stages. They've managed to heavily infest a hapless hiveworld and the Inquisition was nowhere in sight.

Now the hive fleet's a-comin.

This is really cool, and well done. I wish you a speedy recovery, friend.

These upper body workout enthusiasts gave me an opportunity to experiment with a transition from skin tones, over purple, to blue. I used simple feathering, nothing fancy. The skin tone is White Scar with Reikland Fleshshade.

Some WIP photos of an Armoured Sentinel. The weapons will be magnetized, and I think I'll paint it worn and rusty like the tanks.
