Hey Dakka,
So, long story short, I own two elite armies (Necrons/Ultramarines based around sternguard). I'd love to own something swarmy. I love the tyranid aesthetic, but I'm not sure how best to make use of my two favorite models (Warriors and Hormagaunts)
I've read enough dakka to know these aren't competitive choices, but in friendly flgs games, I think I would be fine.

So, as a proof of concept, let me know if this is a viable army please, i'd be happy to take feedback as well.
My plan, was to have the Tyrant fly up the board with the mass of gaunts, aiming for a turn 2 assault, as the tyranocytes come in, using the venomthropes for mobile cover saves for the gaunts. Synapse is given from the Tervigon following behind the gaunts, in case the Hive Tyrant gets too far ahead. More synapse drops in with the warriors in a very nasty assault unit, as most everything arrives turn 2, and causes multiple threat overload.

Thoughts?

1 Hive Tyrant, (wings, 2 x TL devs, Egrubs)
1 Venomthrope,
1 Venomthrope,
Tyranocyte (Devourers)
Tyranocyte (Devourers)
x15 Hormagaunts (TS)
x15 Hormagaunts (TS)
x15 Hormagaunts (TS)
x15 Hormagaunts (TS)
x5 Warriors (Adrenal Glands, rending claws) (In Tyrannocyte)
Carnifex (x2 Twin Linked Devourers/ BLW) (In Tyranocyte)
Tervigon (ML 2)
Termagants x10

Sternguard though, those guys are all about kicking ass. They'd chew bubble gum as well, but bubble gum is heretical. Only tau chew gum.

Have you looked into the endless swam formation? Does what it says on the tin and provides all the gribblies that your after.

Flyrant looks good pretty much the go to set up but the problem with having only one is that he will get shot down quick as he us quite rightly feared by pretty much everything.

If you were to stick with your above list I would suggest either 3 20 man squads or 4 15 man squads for the hormogaunts to increase survivability

Hrmmm....You have a good point. 4 15 man squads would also be easier to maneuver. I have the venomthropes to support it.

I haven't looked into formations yet. I dont know nids yet

Tervigons are only ML1.

For Warriors you want smallish squads with guns (preferably a Biocannon so they can sit back). . If you're kitting them out for CC, then you're better off with Shrikes since they are faster (and even then, Raveners outshine Shrikes in CC)

I'd also try and get another Flyrant in. One is going to get focus fired down, two share the pain (standard rule with Flyer's and FMC's for me, if you're taking one, take at least two).

Something that's I've not tried but want to is 20 Termagants with Devourers (Devilgants) inside a Tyrannocyte. Popping out is 60 S4 shots. Might be worth looking into if you want to go with a swarm route.

Would it be worth it to just completely axe the tervigon, and go with a second flyrant?

The Flyrant is the best unit in the Codex so it would be a very good switch.

That said your ground forces would be in need of Synapse as your Flyrants will race on ahead. You could change one unit of Hormagaunts into a unit of 30x Termagants and find points for a Troops Tervigon instead (I like to equip mine with EGrubs for D3 Haywire against charging Walkers, such as IK and Crushing Claws for Armourbane attacks).

If you did use a Tervigon, then Zoanthropes/min squad Warriors/Malanthropes make good additional Synapse beacons so your Hormagaunts don't start eating themselves.
