I managed to get my hands on one of these pods for a good deal at Adepticon this year. After reviewing it's current rules, I don't see a purpose for the drop pod other than for a contemptor to deep strike in (and just to look awesome). The rules make it sound awesome but also seem to contradict each other. Am I missing anything else? How do you guys use them?

I make bad decisions and think they are good.

While you no longer get the first turn assault, it does give you the ability to require he opponent to kill the pod first, or to give you a 'free' smoke save while being able to still shoot. It can also make it harder to shoo your army behind the pods - handing out shrouded Id that good.

Shame they no longer can do that. At least the model looks awesome!

Protecting what's inside is the purpose.
Unlike other drop pods, the embarked unit doesn't have to get out on the turn it lands.
