Ok, I'm a little bit out of 40k since a year (or 7ed) (work work work). Now the armies I saw are lists like 2 wraithknights with serpents flamer spam, 3-5 Knights or deathbike star.

If I need to build an army list now, what I should consider to bring on the table top again all the ugly lists or I just bring 15 Thanatar and I said : Go F yourself.....

Wind is right. Find a place where people don't play like that and bring the units you like, enjoy or just plain want to bring. There are places that are nothing but the most ridiculous lists or the most cut-throat competitive lists, but that's not the entire game or everywhere that plays it.

I moving back to Québec and I will need to find new people to play. My biggest fear the dirty competitive become the casual game and I cannot do anymore the ''Take and Hold'' tactics.

I'm doing good with footslogging orkses. Take and hold works if you can controle the midfield and have enough board coverage to respond to objective grabbers.

I find that you playing what ever you want is not a good way to go need to go with one of the net build to do good like i hate running serpent spam but that's the only way to play eldar

I think 'a good way to go' is relative though. As others already said, it really depends on who you're playing.

I personally run un-optimized lists, but have a great time even when getting smashed. To me it's more about fielding cool units, rolling some dice and having a good time.

Of course, if you're rolling into a game looking for a win, then yeah net-lists are your best bet. No right or wrong, just what OP is looking to get out of games.

Actually if you insist on playing maelstrom (and you really really should) then playing the "take and hold" will win you lots of games.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

My main army is CSM (Iron Warrior) all in rhino (sometime allied with some bloodletters) with vindicator and 2 hellbrutes. Fast enough but I cannot rush any movement like I did before if I don't want my rhinos to be glace to death.
Second army is a Raven Guard : assault squads, scouts, land speeders and storm talons. Fast but died faster.
Thirt a nids army focussing on tyranid warriors but the Knight show me my main weakness (long range gun to bring him down)
And now I'm working on a Krieg/Mechanicum army just because i want some big guns and thanatars. (feel evil).

Hyperspace

CSM is straight up bad.

Get some Grav Centurions, stick an invisibility Librarian in them, wreck everything.

Ditch the Warriors, run 2+ Flyrants

Embrace it.

Peregrine - If you like the army buy it, and don't worry about what one random person on the internet thinks.

I've managed to make rhino marines and helbrutes work good.

Helbrutes form a murderpack - 5 in a single squad. Get buffed with bikersorc that rolls around with spawns. Marines roll around the map, provide melta and plazma shots, score points, bauble wrap brutes when needed. They work best in min squads with melta/plasma + combi and a dozer rhino. A couple of oblits for ranged support or DS stuff. I also like plasma-termies but you might be short on points if you have lots of rhino marines for them.

It works best with tzeencian daemon allies. 200 pts for 5 extra wc and some summoning/witchfire potential. Might be problematic with iron warriors fluffwise but something like a bunch of summoned daemonettes to bauble wrap your brutes or backlines, a bunch of khornedogs to rush the field or a herald for extra WC generation is very helpful.

Do you have any longer ranged support? Or deepstrike ability? To go with Iron Warriors fluff, and keep your rhinos alive, it might be a good idea to back them up with oblits or predators. Seems like a lot of what you run is short ranged (24" vindicators, hellbrutes in general, 24" threat from marines).

I could see the more mobile armies (for example wave serpent spam) kiting you and avoiding your threats from afar.

I have two vanilla pred (lasecannon and autocannon) and a havoc (missile launcher or plasma gun/lasecannon). I played mostly 1500 pts game. A vindicator is good enough and the havoc do the job again most of the light tank.

At 2000 pts, i bring between 40-50 CSM (troops and chosen), 7 tanks (4xrhino, 2xpreds,1x vindi) 2 hellbrute or one decimator).

The game changer since two years are the Riptides, Wraithknights, Knights, LOW and D weapons.

Now I have a cavalry army who fight again cowards hidden behind ADL with D weapons.

I miss chaos 3.5 ed.

Cavalry armies are great in maelstrom missions.

The problem with CSM is they lack access to good things in the SM codex i.e. they are just worse than regular space marines.

Expensive and lack ATSKNF, grav, good options etc...

They do get helldrakes though
