So, Ork players: did the fluff change significantly between this 'dex and the last? Or is it pretty much the same? Are the tribes different, or are essentially identical to last edition?

I don't think much changed, except we added Grukk with Stormclaw. The text was re-written and a few details were omitted, but not much new.

I might be mistaken but the orky "i believe => it's gona work" thing was strongly avoided in the new dex fluff. If a person not familliar with previous fluff would read the new book, he'd not even have an idea about how the big green affects the way orky tech works.
It's also stated that orks might apear out of thin air and not just spores.
They've omitted Grotsnik's hilarious background and just made him a stupid butcher.
Advanced the plot with Ghazzy starting to hear voices even more often and magically teleporting together with his fleet (or just a ship - can't remember) away from the imperial party chasing him in open space. He's glowing with green light and stuff. Heading to Octarius to have a word with their Warlord as he wants to start the largest WAAAGH! ever.
All the tribes are the same.

Gazzy can also now communicate with other Orks (specifically he does this with the warbosses / warlords still waging the war on Armageddon) psychically. He can also apparently see what they do, and both of these things happen in real-time.
Confirmed via the fact that he scolds some biker boss right after they've butchered an IG battalion. Gazzy commenting that if the boss wants to really prove his worth and be useful, he should be hunting and killing Space Marines.

Two Ghazghkull Thrakas could kill Marneus Calgar more easily than one.

My hypothesis for Ghazghkull travelling in time is that the Ork Warboss who almost killed the Emperor is actually Ghazghkull in the past. That would make some sense in my opinion.

That would be interesting, Gazzy keeps going back in time to gather all the orks that ever existed. quite the task, but the mightiest of WAAAGGHHHS. That would mean he keeps getting bigger and badder.
