Hey there everyone,

I want to apologize in advance for yet another storm-shields thread. I tried searching for my question but couldn't find an exact match.

Can you actually field a model with a storm-shield, thunder hammer...and storm bolter? At a glance I want to say no...but assuming you found the right army entry: can you actually have the "holy trinity" of shooting twice, a 3++, and a kill-hammer? The reason why I am wondering this is the plethora of similar threads that say something along the lines of: "You can wield a relic blade, a storm shield, and still shoot with a bolter/bolt pistol." Under that logic it seems you can have a melee loadout and a ranged loadout on the same character...which seems kinda nuts.

So how about it? Can you really do shooty+smashy? (for an absurd amount of points that would then immediately get killed the first round without fail.)

You can, providing you have the army list option to, carry as many bits of gear as you want. While there is no such option available, if there were you could run a character in Terminator Armour with a Power Fist, Lightning Claw, Storm Bolter, Storm Shield, Combi-plasma and Meltabombs.

The limiting factor most of the time, however, is that you have to swap a weapon to get a weapon, and most models only have 2 swappable weapons. A SM Captain, for example, starts with a Bolt Pistol and CCW, and can swap either/or for Melee, Ranged or Relic items, so could only ever have 2 pieces of equipment from those lists (for example, a Storm Shield and Combi-Melta, a Combi-Melta and Thunder Hammer or a Thunder Hammer and Storm Shield, but not all 3 at the same time as he can only ever swap 2 items).

Short version: Your army list will tell you how many weapons you have, how many you can swap for and therefore how many you can end up with. It's usually 2 per model, but there are a few exceptions to this.

Thanks for clearing that up! :-)

Sometimes the codex can be a bit tricky to make sense of...but hey: let's just call that part of the game :-P

The captian and chapter master don't actually need to swap anything for the storm shield.... the entry just says they can take one. It doesn't list anything needing to be swapped for it. They do need to swap bolt pistol or chainsword for other weapons though

Assuming you are talking about codex: smace marines then Chapter master=yes. Captain=no. The SM captains do not have access to a thunder hammer. As for Blood angles, Dark Angles, and Space Wolves I'm not sure. I know when I did my DA models I made a guy with a relic sword, storm shield, and storm bolter in terminator armor so thats a strong maybe.

That's bokum, SM Captains have access to a Thunder Hammer through the Melee Weapons list. Exactly the same list the Chapter Masters have access to.

You are correct. My mistake was assuming it was only in the terminator weapons list.

I'm pretty sure I can give an entire squad of DA vets that setup actually, since you add shields to them, not replace weapons with shields. The only thing I'd need to check on is if they can take hammers, they might only get fists.

The other funny thing I've always considered doing was making a vet carry a heavy bolter and a storm shield....

Don't look to the Grey Knights. Our only dude with a Stormshield is a Lord of War, although he does have a Stormbolter and a +3 Str AP2 Force weapon.
