Subject: A question about Goblin Armies...

Since I've been finishing off a bunch of LotR Moria Goblin models lately, I've decided to sort them into a small force for KoW - though it may well end up "Ally-sized". I've got a question about Goblin heroes in KoW - are they worth taking in numbers? Basically, I've got a bunch of "goblin captains" and other metal goblin models that stand out nicely from the rather tedious plastics, while being armed similarly (Sword & Board/Spear/Bow). I'm wondering if a typical Goblin army features few or many characters so I can work out whether or not to just use them as Unit leaders (which was the plan) or as lots of cheap, low-level heroes.

I have never used them at all, instead preferring to field a minimum of 4-5 Wiz's in all my games (usually 1500 pts army). I find they are much better at hurting enemies with their Zap 3 than Biggits in close combat. They also have inspiring so they work great scattered between my units. I am not saying they might not work, I just prefer Wiz guys.
Of course, I am talking in 1st edition rules here, since in 2nd edition they lose their Inspiring rule. Still haven't played any 2nd edition games.

True that they've lost it, inspiring is just as golden as it used to be though. I don't play goblins, but given their low nerve (even for a horde) you'll want ways to keep them around as long as possible... Goblin heroes aren't exactly expensive though, so maybe a solid mix? 2-3 kings/biggits for 2-3 wiz? The wiz's being able to buy Bane Chant for fairly cheap is a nice bonus too...

Thanks guys. Useful info to have. I looked through all my stuff. I was sure I had at least 1-2 goblin shaman models, but I found none. Bloody annoying, that!
Maybe I'll use some of the albino Hobbit Plastics for Shamans...

That's pretty much what I'll probably fielding from now on, 1-2 Biggits (or maybe Flaggits?) and as many Wiz as I can fit. ZapZapZap!!!

Hm... with Utterly Spineless/Yellow Bellied, does that also apply to heroes? It's listed as applying to "units" - so it depends on if an Individual is also a unit. I assume so, but I want to make sure before my Goblins hit the table, because I can see an argument arising there...

I assume that they are. Heroes are classed as a type of unit on p.2 of the beta rules, and the special rules sidebar on page 63 does say all units, "unless specidied."

Heroes are units, so yes Utterly Spineless does apply to them.
