So I've painted up some deathwing and put them on bases, but they look pretty much out of the factory, and not as if they've just been fighting.. How would I make them look like they were just trudging around for a while? I've used pigments, but I'm not really happy with how it looks..

Depends how you want them to look. Washes are great for adding definition or "dirtying" up a model. I love Nuln Oil for looks of use on bolters and machines, or Agrax Earthshade for a brownish tinge of mud or dirt. I assume that's the effect you're going for, so I'd recommend a wash in the color you're trying to give them.

The quick way is to very gently drybrush the feet with whatever you've used to drybrush the base. I do this a lot.

Personal preference is using pigment powered (raw umber for me) and dusting both the base and a bit of there equipment.

Then sealing the whole thing.

it makes them look like part of the base and landscape.

Other easy way is just to dry brush the dirt color you used and chip the armor a bit. (not actually chip but paint on battle damage)
