Subject: Necron Immortals in units of 5

I'm currently trying to put together a Necron Decurion Detachment. The bonuses it grants are too much to ignore. What I need right now are some Immortals. Never played with them, never used them, never seen them perform. My question is to all you fellow Necron players is - will I be allright with a single unit of 5 or should I get 10 of them? I have plenty of other units and I just want to fulfill core requirements but I also don't want my unit to instantly go down in flames because there were too few of them.

A 5 man unit is just fine for a Decurion. It's a tax, yes, but it's also a unit that's pretty damn durable for 85 points. I used to keep mine in reserves to not give up first blood too easily, but I've recently realized that it' not necessary at all, unless the opponent has something that is specifically very good at killing them (like a basilisk or other S8+ and AP3 barrage with no decent cover available).

I'm glad to hear that. I love the idea of the Decurion but it seems to be very limiting in terms of what I can bring to the table. Keeping them in reserves seems like a good idea as well, think I'll be doing that. At least until I get past my fear of easily losing a 5-man squad.

Decurion immortals are about as durable as terminators except against ap3 but they do better against ap2.
They are pretty safe to start on the table.

Probably best used as a cheap durable objective holder, with Tesla if you plan on keeping them in your backfield (better than Gauss at 12-24", but Gauss is better at 0-12"). I'd probably still go Gauss though, just because you can still charge after firing if need be thanks to Relentless, and might manage to Snap Shot a hull point off a flier or something whilst holding that backfield objective.

Stick them in a NS - great shooty unit, run them up the table turn 2/3 and grab an objective.

Warriors are only slightly less durable than termis (and only due to the ap3-4 gap) so immortals should be more durable by a long way.

I tend to run two units of 5 Immortals since they are slow and I don't have a NS to put them in. They are great for camping on back side objectives and keeping a deathgrip on them.

I've run 5 in a CAD, decided to put my Warriors in the Nightscythe. Didn't lose a single one, they'll most definitely be fine in a Decurion.

15 immortals dropping out of a night scythe next to an enemy unit will really, really mess up your enemy's day.
