I have been considering this question for some time now. MSU works effectively in maelstrom and objective based games in 40k, So would that translate into 30k. The question stems from the really annoying fact that there is an overwhelming standardization for legion vehicles to have 10 man capacities. and it is difficult to put anything in reasonably priced transport. or is the 10+ model unit blobs pretty much the way to go?

Nothing wrong with tacticals in a rhino... The legion rules aren't great at board control , but you can build it in.

Maybe one way to help mitigate not being able to cover the whole board would be to use phosphex to make areas you can't hold less desirable?

The problem with Legion MSU is this: You pay a higher price per body for the base part of a squad, but extra bodies cost less each (for example, 150pts for a squad of 10 tacticals, but only 100pts to add 10 more), and this design philosophy is present throughout the entire list. You would be paying a very high price to field additional squads compared with fewer squads totaling the same number of models. It comes down to choosing your objectives wisely, really. Admittedly, it is one more disadvantage the Legions have when playing against 40K armies in 40K missions.

TBH I think a lot of the problem with 20-man Tac blobs isn't so much that the transports are expensive for them, as it is that the transports aren't dedicated. So in order to keep your Heavy (or FA) slots open, you basically need to bring some Terminators so that your Tac blobs can jack a Spartan. I don't much mind the expense of a Spartan either- with "a bit" of kit they become AV14 all around, 5 HPs, and can get both the Flare Shield and Armored Ceramite.

It's basically the ultimate in metahl bawkses- especially against Tau, where the only "reliable" option that they'll really have is flanking Hammerheads. After all, due to the Flare Shield's rules, a Nova Charged IA is actually unable to penetrate the frontal armor of a Spartan! Combined with Armored Ceramite, and you're now immune to meltacide drops.

Season to taste the 30K-era Mechanicum allies so that you can bring a Thanatar and rain S8/AP2 pie plate death on all the things. Bonus points for taking Paragon of Metal and playing against Tau- don't forget your sunglasses!

In all seriousness though, I'd consider MSU to be a poor tactic with the Legion list- the Taghmata 30K list is actually one that has potential for a pseudo-MSU setup and spamming Triaros Conveyors to provide a wall of sorts for Krios tanks or the Castellax and Thanatar automata. Also, insofar as Maelstrom objectives go- maybe bring some Legion Jetbikes? Seems like it's an idea that could work- also, don't forget that you can do a sort-of MSU with Legion Terminators in Dreadclaw pods, which also means that they can board up and zip off to do something else when needed.
