Just wondering what the closest scale would be for 40k vehicles when compared to the regular model scale (1:72, 1:35, etc).

Looking at acquiring some aircraft model parts for my Tau Hammerhead...but dont want to have a huge difference in sizing.

And stores don't appreciate it when you open boxes to compare...for some reason!

If I remember right it's something like 1/42 or 1/48 but their scaling is way off. Closest you will likely get is 1/35. The tanks in that scale work ok. I'm using 1/35 Hermaphrodites for counts as and they work pretty well.

Help me, Rhonda. HA!

This Dakka article should provide about as many answers as you can expect to find. The trouble with matching 40k to a real-world scale is that the GW designers aren't even consistent, let alone realistic. Heads and hands are large, guns are huge, vehicles are squat and chunky while still being undersized...

Some vehicles can be made to fit reasonably seamlessly, but most you will find only match one dimension or another - the right footprint means the hatches and weapons are tiny, the right length means the hull is too skinny, etc. Airplanes are frequently the hardest of all, since most 40k flyers are less aerodynamic that your average cinderblock. Your best bet will likely be to look for larger scale kits of smaller aircraft - a 1:35 2-seater will likely render more useable parts than a 1:72 bomber or cargo plane.

We have had pretty good luck matching 1:35 scale tank parts; and O-scale model train parts.

Here are some photos of our O-scale steam locomotive -- an Ork fits right into the cab and seems size-appropriate.

The turret on our locomotive was hacked together from a 1:35 scale Panzer tank.

It varies a lot. As has been stated, 40k vehicles are pretty weirdly proportioned compared to modern vehicles.

What specifically are you looking at doing? Is it the canopy you were talking about in your other thread, or something else?

If it's something like that, I'd measure up the size you want in order to properly fit your Hammerhead and then work backwards to figure out what scale in different real world vehicles you'll need to match that.

Yeps, is the canopy from my other thread.

Idea is to take the canopy from the Hind and replace part of the long "top" area on a Hammerhead. Craft a cockpit of sorts and put Longstrike in there.

Not my hammerhead...but what i would ne converting is in that orange painted area.

You'd probably want a 1/48 one then.
