Played MoH last night. It was 120 points anything goes which almost made me just turn around and walk out of the FLGS. The other change was that the STD Tokens became obstacles, which added a little bit more to the scenario, but not much.

My list:
Scimitar
Capt. Toreth
Admiral Mendak
Tactical Officer
Polaried Hull Plating
Interphase Generator
Counter Attack
Disruptor Beams
Massacre

USS Enterprise-D Mirror Universe
Capt. William T. Riker
Elim Garak
Tasha Yar
Fire All Weapons
We Can't Go Back!
Quantum Torpedoes

Notes on my list: I had a different build in mind under the WizKids suggested format, and we had been playing ship pure for ever, so I have no idea why the sudden change. This list was pretty much thrown together at the last minute and I wish I had taken into account the scenario a bit more. I loved having two Capt. Skill 9 ships, but the upgrades on the Scimitar... I wish I had taken cloaked mines instead of the hull plating. I also didn't realize Disruptor Beams could not be fired out the back arc. That was a bit disappointing. Massacre was worth it, and I just might try and pick up another one of those. Such a great card. If you inflict a [crit] on the enemy's Hull, discard this card for +1 damage to that ship. 3 points. So worth it!.

The MU Enterprize is just so full of win, that I think it's my favorite ship in the game. Never used my Quantum Torps, Fire All Weapons, and We Won't Go Back! once during the event. More on that in a second.

Round 1:
Opponent: Excelsior, Yeager, Star Gazer, Sutherland, some OK captains, couple torps. New player, didn't build his fleet all that well. During the first planning phase, we roll for the Subatomic Bacteria Tokens, which quickly became known as 'Teh AIDS Token', and I didn't pay enough attention to the scenario and rolled a crit on my Mu Enterprize, and pulled the "Damaged Sensor Array"- so actions on your action bar... did I mention MU Riker was the captain? And my Scimitar takes a hull damage. All his ships take a point as well. We fly straight at each other, I cloaked the Scim, and used an action to attempt to flip the crit over (successfully). Some shooting goes on, damage here, damage there. Everyone gets another token. Planning phase- I take another hit on both my ships and more tokens. My opponent takes some more damage as well. I'm thinking he was going to go 1 forward to use his torps (My Mu Enterprise is all sorts of Target Locked up by 3 ships). So I select a 4 forward thinking I'll get behind him. Nope. Smack right into his "line abreast" formation of all four ships (I had mine pretty much in a line as well). No actions for me, and the Enterprise get's blown up, but it takes out the Star Gazer with Tasha Yar's ability. My Scimitar blows up the Yeager, and now it's the Excelsior and Sutherland against my Scimitar. Everyone gets another token.

At this point, I have 4 tokens on my Scimitar, he has 6 on his Excelsior, and 4 on his Sutherland. Roll dice, and look at that! I take another Hull Damage. My Scimitar is down 4 hull (3 left). His Excelsior is down 1 shield and a couple hull. The SBT's blow up the Sutherland. So now it's just the Excelsior and Scimitar. We do a little maneuvering, shoot at each other, and end the turn with 1 hull point left on each ship. Next planning phase, he's rolling 7 SBT dice on his Excelsior, and I'm rolling 5 on my Scimitar. We both blow up to the SBT. We roll the five attack dice for ties, and I get two Battle Stations to his none, and I win. But it didn't feel like a victory...

Round 2:
This was the reason I almost walked out of the FLGS. Named Borg Sphere, regular Sphere, and Octahedron, 0 point Drone captains. I won't go too much into the play here, just to note that my Mu Enterprise once again started the game with Hull Damage. I managed to destroy the named Sphere, but was crushed. I think the game lasted three turns? I hate the Borg.

Round 3:
Alpha Hunter, Dom Fighters, and I don't remember his third ship, but I remember it only had 3 hull. My opponent admitted his fleet was a total mistake for this event- he had planned for the previous OP. In this game, I totally gained a new appreciation for the Alpha Hunter; more specifically Karr. I'll be getting that ship today. FYI, he can reroll one attack die twice, and if his skill is higher then yours, he gets +1 attack die. Oh yeah, and he had a card that lowered my captain skill by 2, and got another +1 attack die from somewhere else... Seems like everyone was gunning for my MU Enterprise, and again, before the game even really started, I took hull damage thanks to the SBT. And I took 3 more damage over the next three turns as well. So it was really no surprise when the Alpha Hunter blew it up. However, my opponent was not rolling all that great with the SBT's as well. I learned from my first game and started to shoot the tokens off my ships. So end game, I had only 1 token on my Scimitar. He had piled on the hull damage all game to the point where he blew himself up with the SBT's.

So I went 2-1, and unsurprisingly lost to the Borg. Other fleets of note:

Jem'Hader Battle Ship
Beetle ship- but the Beetle Ship had a bunch of movement shenanigans on it that allowed it to be up in your fleet turn 2, while his battleship stayed way, way far away. Said little Beetle ship had "I Stab At Thee" twice, Cheat Death, and Suicide Attack. I didn't get a close look at the build, but it was supposedly legit from the TO and other players. Basically, he runs the Beetle straight at you, and blows up twice. Then his Dom Battleship mops up. He went 2-1 though, because he lost to... wait for it, wait for it... a Borg Cube Dreadnaught. Go figure.

The only thing that keeps me coming back to play in these OP's is that we usually get 4-5 prize ships (the TO always donates his), and yes, first place always gets one, and LAST place always get's one. The remaining three are randomly handed out, or sometimes everyone agrees that one player should get it for something he did or whatever. I got one during the End Game because I was the only player out of 14 that successfully made it back to the Alpha Quadrant and closed the wormhole in all three of my games. I lost all my games, but hey! I played the scenario.

I'm really, really disappointed that my FLGS went back to the "No Holds Barred" fleet building. He fully realizes the pit falls and why its a bad idea, but he said he got so many complaints, gripes, and passive aggressive comments about it from the WAAC players that he just didn't want to deal with it anymore. So now he gets complaints from the non-WAAC crowd, but he pretty much ignores everyone. So my meta is completely dominated by WAAC Borg players. The TO does a great job running the events, and I have no complaint about him, but the WAAC players are really starting to me off. They have driven away most of the casual and new players, and like I said, if it wasn't for the random prizes at the end, I think the only players would be the WAAC players at OP's. I'd rather buy my prize ships off eBay then have to play one of them.

Mostly, on my phone.

Depressing indeed. Kudos on the return to alpha, though! I've got a feeling that you can't cheat death / suicide attack, that it's been ruled on, but can't find the ruling. Hmm.

Sounds like you make a good show of it despite some serious cheese. It's a shame your TO folds to a little pressure. One thing you might consider is changing venues. If nobody else is running them try talking to other store ownes and see if they will shell out for one OP kit or let you buy it through them so you can run the OP at their store. From what I understand the kits cost $45 so if you can get at least 3 people to come and have them buy a ship for an entry fee the store is breaking even. More people = more profit if you TO for them you can set some more reasonable house rules.

Also just an FYI Massacre is unique

It wasn't a little pressure, it was a lot of pressure. No person that volunteers should have to put up with the crap he was getting.

If I try and become a TO, that will look like I'm trying to stab the current TO in the back, and is just bad form. I don't want to further create a schism, know what I mean?

Changing venues isn't an option. We tried at the only other store in town willing to let us take up some of their precious Magic:The Gathering space on a Friday evening. 12 players paying $15 for a blind ship != the 24 players displaced out of Friday Night Magic who pay $5 and buy 5 Booster Packs (or more if it's a draft night). Store Manager basically said "we'll host OP's, but only if 20 or more people show up, and not on a Magic night". Magic is hosted on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at his shop. From a business perspective, I can't argue with the guy. Magic players drop stupid amounts of money on that game every other month when a new set comes out. A STAW player buys what, maybe a ship when a new wave comes out? Most Magic players I know buy a CASE (36 packs of 15 cards each...). AND they will happily buy more during the release cycle of a set. Wizards of the Coast might as well be printing money with the format and scheduling they have for Magic.

If I want to play in the OP's, this is what I have. I don't like it, but it's the hand that's dealt me. Luckily for me, the same Borg Players are horrible X-wing and D&D Attack Wing players. I laughed when one guy that showed up with a Fat Han+C3PO and another YT1300 list lost to a three X-wing build of Biggs, Wedge, and Luke. He threw a fit. Oh, and the other STAW WAAC player that had Tycho with all the trimmings, Wedge+R2D2, and a Rookie Pilot losing to a double Fire Spray list and my 3-Hwk list.

The Borg make STAW a horrible game to play when you face them. I know I sound like a broken record, but the Borg ruined STAW.
