Hey guys,

After building my Imperial Fists, trying my hand and Nids then moving to Storm Lords I sold up but am now back. I have always wanted to do griffons and I reckon I am neat enough to get a tabletop standard job that looks reasonable from a distance (in the dark)

Now I have go the red and yellow down BUT I have no idea what to do trim wise?! Aquila, pad trim etc.

I have included an image of the base coloured torso. The colours are staying quite bright, think Fred Reed's Howling Griffons from like '94.

I am aware I need to neaten it up a little across the back of the neck, I thought the meeting line on the red had dried and hit it with the brush :( Smudged :( I also have a tiny chip in the yellow where I caught it with my nail but thats ok. There isn't red on the underside of the aquila, that is just light reflection, anyone, enough defending my paint! haha

Black or Grey chest eagle, with grey/steel shoulderpad trim is what most of the newer FW images show. 2E stuff shows black-ish chest eagle with shoulderpad trim matching the red/yellow as appropriate.

I think a dark gray/granite look on the aquila would look good. It would provide some contrast and wouldn't be solid black.

I'm not certain that there is a canon colour for the details.

Fred Reed's HGs have dark blue details

This HG has bone coloured details

This one has dark grey details

Whereas this one is white

I would suggest rule of cool. Darker details are less likely to distract from the bright main colours of the armour itself.

Man, look at Fred's, so neat! The only thing I don't love about that force is that it's not mine! *old land speeder love*

I am thinking maybe some kind of grey/silver aquila and then either leaving the pads the colour they are painted (one red, one yellow) or giving them 5th company black pauldron trim.

The codex seems to indicate a grey/silver aquila but that said I am rather tempted by black but I am just worried with he black rubber pipes on the torso it might all look a bit dark and heavy?

Ah man. The HG. So cool. Show us what you come up with/choose.

I remember that WD.

IN fact, I was only wondering the other day if Fred got any sort of payoff for creating a chapter that GW then made canon?!

I didn't realise Fred came up with them! I highly doubt it.

I took a little dude into my local GW today with the bases that I have nearly finished looking for some inspiration. I am currently torn between 3 (not 50, thankfully) shades of grey:
Eshin
Dawnstone
Adimistrtum

The GW staff said try bronze. I have 10 torsos painted now, all waiting for detail. The staff said when I have finished my 10 and another unit (no idea on that yet) they will display them in the store which is pretty cool (at least I think it is, who knows?!)
So ladies and gentlemen, the time is now. What do I pick? I feel the pressure haha.

also here are my bases because, well why not?! They just need a tiny bit of dark green for the moss areas between a couple of the stones. I know they are basic but they do the job and I haven't based in a while. I went for mostly black because then the little dudes should pop really bright against the base

If I'm working with a gray usually I do a eshin finished with either highlight or edging with dawnstone.

The Eshin is a really dark shade of grey though. I'd do a trial run on one or two with a thin layer to see what you like best. All depends on how you want it to stand out

It is done!

so now I just need to neaten up around the pipes and give it a wash! The little stud of the belt is in a dark bronze colour so it kind of shines a little. I am really happy with it. Feed back please!

Also I am thinking about dry brushing the little guy, recommendations on colour? I was thinking maybe tyrant skull?

Looking good!

The other thing to consider, is as a codex chapter, it wouldn't be out of line to do the company color on the shoulderpad trim. That's what I usually default to myself on codex marines.

Yeah, I am kinda tempted by that, just trying to see what works best. A lot of images of them they don't seem to display company colours but I can't seem to find any reasoning for this.

The howling griffons are codex compliant, so UM chapter colors, and in the fluff, they use creme colored aquillas. It's a bit late, but will hopefully help out others with the same question.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.
