I think subject line says it all.
My coworker is nervous about doing this and this is a play piece and not just for display, so durability is probably key

Since a mate showed me this method, on some of his Formula 1 (cars) display models, I've never looked back. Comes up looking like its painted on every time!
Gloss varnish (wait for it to dry)
Pop your decal in the water
apply Decal Medium (Vallejo) to the area on the model you are going to put the decal on.
slide on your decal and use cotton bud to remove excess water
apply a little more Decal Medium over the top.
Don't touch it!
Wait for it to dry
Another coat of Gloss Varnish
Wait fro that to dry
Then hit it with a Mat Varnish.
Good luck!

What does Decal Medium do? I have always wondered.
Thank you!

I use Micro set and Micro sol. I swear by these when applying decals. You can find plenty of YouTube vids on how they work. Try it, you may like it.

From my understanding, Decal medium, like Micro sol, breaks down the Decal and makes it really soft and spongy. Hence why why I say "don't touch it".

After Decal after the medium has dried, you have at least 2 coats of varnish protecting it. Also, if the area becomes "shiny" you know that the mat varnish is wearing away and you need to apply a touch up coat before the gloss varnish comes away... But you'd have to be pretty rough and handsy with your models. :-)

I second this. They are super easy to use, and will last you a LONG time for even tiny bottles. The combination will almost 'melt' your decal to the underlying surface, so you will get very good adhesion, and under varnish, it will be basically as durable as the rest of the paint job.
