Waiting at the Dark Tower steps..

I got a game with a old friend next week and lets just say he kicked the gak out of me with his tau army! (literally he took no losses!) Now I face him with my orks of course im going for the green tide and try and over run him with boyz... But I was hoping I could get pointers or ideas for certain units that excel vs Tau (especially riptides!)

Thanks!

Have a Painboy in the unit to give them all F'n'P. Tau have few high ROF Str 8+ weapons, so your basically saving 1/3 of your boys.

Take Tank Busta's, as many as you can fit. Str 8 Ap 3 is murder on wheels against Crisis Suits and wounds Riptides on 2's. Remember every Tankbusta has a melta bomb, Str 8 AP 1, which will easily beat down a Riptide if he underestimates your charge range (On WAAAAGH! 6'' trukk, 6 disembark, 4'' run and 7'' charge is quite a lot really).

So if your running a big green tide, your army should effectively be the Green Tide, 2 units of 8-ish Tankbusta's and a unit of Mek Guns with those Str 8 Plasma Cannons. They rock.

I imagine that would be your best bet.

Space out your boyz, take painboyz, and in the shooting phase, run don't shoot. Get to the one place that Tau don't want your boyz; in combat.

Alex is pretty good on his assessment. I personally wouldn't go green tide, but I haven't tried it vs tau. I do wish you all the luck though. Honestly.

I have found tau turn 1 are not great at killing armor. The melta guns they have, I notice are always in deepstrike reserves. A large amount of battle wagons might get you there. Also if you went shoota boys turn 1 move 12, and fire on a center unit, with all the boys, you might single out a unit or two from each other making them lose their overlapping fire. That's big. Them not gaining double or triple Overwatch is important to beating tau. If you're running a tide, he's going to shoot you for likely 2-3 turns before you get anywhere, 4 if you fail your charge because you didn't kill the right unit shooting with your back field. No matter what you do, good luck

What points are you playing at? I play 1000 pts vs my brother, and I have a lot of trouble with his deff kopta's, loota's and kannons. Deff kopta's and kannons mostly due to the str 8 shots that insta death crisis suits. Granted, I'm not using a riptide yet, but if you kill everything else, the riptide wont be that much of a threat I suppose .

What happens when he goes first, a truk with choppa boyz and heavy armor rushes forwards, I then need to spend all my shooting taking down the truk + boyz (if only 1-2 survive I'm in a lot of trouble). This frees up with 3 deff koptas, 3 kannons, mek with shock attack gun to go ham on my stuff. When I go first I try to focus on taking out the truk + deff koptas and keeping stuff out of LOS.

My brother also runs a dread but that is mostly useless as its way to slow, he also has another squad of shoota boyz with a mek with KFF. But mostly I have to say those str 8 shots that eat crisis suits make me a sad Tau commander.

Your main target is not to kill them but to keep them away from midboard points. They can't get close if you're there. Press him but be careful not to loose to much. you've got an upper hand at board controle - use it.

Get rid of markerlights asap - use ranged support for that. Ignore riptides. If you have KMK, try to kill broadsides and crysis suits asap. If you have no ap2, go for crysis suits first. Don't aim to rush at him as fast as possible. Just take the midboard and oppress him. You'll be winning a VP race soon enough.
