This may have been asked already, so sorry if it has.

The wording in the book is kind of open to interpretation almost, can I take a normal force org/CAD detachment or do I have to run it with the formations in the book?

You can take a normal CAD or Allied Detachment. The book doesn't forbid this type of Detachment (unless I am missing something).

Can take any in whatever combinations you'd like. It's 7-th.

Indeed. You can always use Combined Arms detachments and allied detachments - you still get the Blood Tithe effects, but unless you have the daemonkin's special detachment, you won't be getting free points or second bonuses or whatever.

You will, on the other hand, get objective secured.

Yes you can ( and should) run a CAD with two Bloodthirsters as HQ, 2 cultist units, and then as many more Lord Of Slaughter Bloodthirsters as you have points.

Except you can't do that. You can only take as many Lords of Slaughter as you have Slaughtercults and and it's not a Formation to be taken individually. That would be an Unbound list.

To keep it "Battle Forged", you'd have to take a Slaughter Cult + Lord of Slaughter + (your other mandatory auxilliary formation) and then a CAD.

Huh. I'm new to this formation thing. My apologies. Something about it seemed strange. Oh well.

My confusion reigns from this part of the codex:

"[Unbound]... If you are using the Battle-forged method, you will instead need to organise the models into Detachments. This is a fun process in its own right. The most common of these are the Combined Arms and Allied Detachments. Note that you can also include any of the Formations presented in this section as part of a Battle-forged army."

Does this not allow you to use any of the formations on their own in a CAD?

Not IN a CAD, but alongside a CAD. The Blood Host Detachment allows you to use Formations as Auxillaries. That lets them all be influenced by the umbrella of that Detachment's Command Benefits. But, the Formations that are listed in the Datasheets can be taken like any Formation in the game. The Lords of Slaughter one doesn't have a Datasheet, so it's not a Formation, just an extra part of the Blood Host Detachment that is optional.
