I'm new to warhammer 40k and all I have is a necron battleforce and as of this post that hasn't even come in the mail yet so I wanted to know where should I go from here. I don't really know anything about hq choices or where i should go next so I came here.

Welcome to 40k and welcome to the coolest army in the game.

Firstly have fun building your battleforce. From what I can remember you can build a ghost ark, 20 warriors, 5 immortals and some scarabs. Now that is an excellent start.

In order to play at about 500 points you'll need an HQ which I suggest is a command barge. Next you could add a night scythe for the immortals and possibly even another ghost ark. That will give you a great core of your army which you'll probably play 99%of your games with. Plays lots of games with this and see how you get one. Learn their strengths and weaknesses.

After that you should consider adding a formation. The easiest way would be to turn the core into a reclaimation legion - you'll need a box of 3 tomb blades to make it into a RL. All you need for the decurion now is a box of deathmarks and your army gathers an aura of invinicibility about it, especially at low points games.

Another favourite is the canoptek harvester formation - from what you've got you'll need a box of wraiths and a spyder. This will weigh you in at about 1000 - 1200 points depending on your exact options.

Other favourites are more expensive (triach formation is a stalker and two boxes of praetorians at least, ideally 3 or 4 boxes; destroyer wing will set you back 4 boxes of wraiths and a destroyer lord upgrade pack).

Thanks alot for replying so fast and for the advice. I'll definitely follow that route. You clearly have alot of experience with necrons and I'm quite excited to build and paint my battleforce. Next I'll definitely go with the command barge you suggested and see where I go from there. I was also wondering if you had any tips for painting because I've never done anything similar to this and my ghost ark already intimidates me. I'm hoping it comes tomorrow so I have a fun weekend project.

At my desk

I'd go with the advice of Ffyllotek there.

I'd go with the night scythe over another ghost ark, I think them more flexible.

I'd get some Wraith's and/or Lychguard early on, as they can do serious damage in lower point games.

I personally don't like the reclamation legion, but that's up to you.

3000pts Blood Angels (4th Company) - 2000pts Skitarii (Voss Prime) - 2500pts Imperial Knights (Unnamed House) - 1000pts Imperial Guard (Household Retainers)

2000pts Free Peoples (Edlynd Fusiliers) - 2000pts Kharadron Overlords (Barak Zilfin) - 500pts Ironweld Arsenal (Edlynd Ironwork Federation) - 1000pts Duardin (Grongrok Powderheads)

Wargaming's no fun when you have a plan!
