Painting cultists and I'm using the GW paint video they have on YouTube. The guy in the video uses Earthshade for shading, but my local store is sold out of it atm. The shades I have currently are: Devlan Mud, Nuln Oil and Baddab Black. Can any of these be used instead of the Earthshade, or is it so special that it's worth waiting for it to come back in stock?

Thank you! :-)

Devlan and Agrax are pretty much comparable, the former possibly even slightly better, so yeah, that would make a fine substitute. Nuln Oil works at a push, but is better for metallics, greys and whites, while the brown washes do their best work over reds/yellows/browns.

Thank you for the reply!

So the Devlan Mud would work as a Earthshade on my Mephiston Red cloths?

Yep, exactly. Devlan/Agrax over Mechrite/Merphiston Red looks great.

Devlan mud and Badab black are just the old black and brown washes from before GW changed their paint line. They're fine as a substitute for the current black and brown washes, just don't get too attached to them because they're OOP and you may not be able to get replacements easily.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

True, Peregrine, but there's still hope for anyone feeling the loss of the old Citadel Washes - namely, Army Painter's Quickshade Inks.

Unlike the big cans of 'dip-ready' Quickshade, these fall under the Warpaints range and are almost perfect analogues of the now OOP washes, in both color and behavior. Aside from the names (Soft Tone is Gryphonne Sepia, Strong Tone is Devlan Mud, Dark Tone is Badab Black) and the dropper bottle (instead of a flip-top pot, a la GW), I can barely tell a difference.

Make sure youx Devlan mud really well. I noticed with mine a ton of the pigment sticks to the bottom, and I need to scrape it off to mix well.
