Hey, I'm brand new to warhammer. Really like the CSM models so wanted to try them my league is a 500 point for beginners.
The list I'm concocting is
1x Chaos lord
-Mark of Khorne
-Lighting Claws
8x Khorne Berzerkers
-Champion
8x Khorne Berzerkers
-Champion
Please help with ideas. Haven't bought models yet so up for any discussion. League rule is no named units for first month and no flyers for first week flying units treated as with jump pack.
League has several orc armies. Greyknights, tau, blood angles, and tyrniads. ANY and all advice would be great
Thank You.

Unfortunatley you will probably never make it into CC facing Tau, and possibly Nids. Orcs or nids can drown you in numbers. Grey Knights may be doable if the bring PA. Blood Angels can have heavy flamers witch is dangerous. You are facing an uphill battle, but I say more blood for the blood god. I hope you have fun.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

Yeah.. regular csm bezerkers are a bad unit. As a beginner you will find you suffer horribly from being shot off the board before you can do anything.

If you like khorne, the daemonkin have access to bloodletters, chaos marines and bezerkers as troops. (and cultists, if you don't use the fancy formation)
Chaos marines are probably the best troop in either list, although many people just take the minimum amount of cultists as troops.

Some guy named Fritz has a channel on Youtube and talks a lot about chaos.
Now I'm just parroting, but...
*General opinions are the best units to be daemon princes (and their characters) cultists and yes still the helldrake.
*If you want to run CSM the most point efficent method is to take a min bare squad in a rhino with the Havoc Launcher
*Using Daemonkin and the specific formations currently makes for one of (if not, the) best chaos choice.

Ever think about running Nurgle?
You can run a chaos lord, and 2 squads of plague marines.
They have a higher toughness (5), as well as feel FNP and a plague knife.
They are pretty sweet.

I'm a pretty experienced Chaos player... I've got to say, I like the new Khorne Daemonkin Codex a lot more than the regular CSM codex. You could run the exact list you have now, but can make it so much better.
Daemon Princes are awesome, but at 500 pts, you don't really want them unless it's part of a Khorne formation... Even then, that's a lot of points for 1 model...
With the Khorne codex , you'll be able to take more units, and a more varied set of units- the more you kill (and get killed) the more skills/units your army can get using Blood Tithe points... I haven t lost a game using the new codex yet!

Buy the starter box, dremel, green stuff, small earth magnets, chaos space marine set and go to town. Sand down all dark angle icons to replace them with nurgle mutations or khorne icons. Add spikey bits and tenticals. You will have a full army plus gaming rules exc for super cheap. Nurgle bikes and terminators are great, but the new formations of khorne are pretty sweat too. Check out ebay and youtube. If you buy something with options use magnets. Like on the hand that holds the flamer, melta, or plasma.
I run chaos and Daemons about 6000 and 3000 so yeah... all great models and perfect army for greenstuff

And play tips you guys can give me on how to best utilize my units?

At 500 pts I'd field this as competitive:
HQ
Chaos Lord - MoK, melta bombs, Sigil of Corruption, VotLW, Axe of Blind Fury
Troops
10x Cultists - No upgrades
10x Cultists - No upgrades
Fast
5x Chaos Spawns
Heavy
1xObliterator
CSM troops are usually not worth their points (I love them thou so I usually field CMS/Zerks/Plague, but cultists are better), the cultists should just sit on objectives and pretty much hide in cover while going to the ground to avoid as many casualties as possible.
The Juggy+spawns is an excellent unit at any point limit, and fielding it at 500 pts I can't think on anything that can realiable kill them... except S10 AoE that'd be your worst enemy, keep them in cover as much as possible.
The oblie is there just to give some support on turn 1, or if you are facing a heavy armor army you could deepstrike him behind enemy lines and blow up something, with 2+/5++ at 500 he should be hard to take down.

Pretty much. You'll have a hard time against shooty armies but assuming you don't get the hammer & anvil deploy the lord should be charging on turn 2 with the spawns.
I just played a few weeks ago a 750 game vs a Tau with this same list, except that I had a squad on plague marines on a rhino as elites as well. The jugger & spawns took some heavy punishing but using some smart wound allocation (need to know when to use LoS so save with the HQ 3+, and when to just let the wounds go to the spawns) managed to get into combat being only the Jugger with 2 wounds and 2 spawns, one of them with a single wound left. Once they made contact with the Tau suits it was over, due to the multiple wounds on the suits + drones and me having only 2 spawns left, they survived the first round, stood their ground, finished them on his turn, so on my turn now next to the rest of his units I assaulted a 10 man fire warriors unit with the spawn, and another suit unit with my juggy, after overwatch the juggy had 1 wound left, enough to kill his second and last unit of suits, the spawn didn't get any wounds from the fire warriors, beat them on combat and swept them.
At the end of the game all that was left was my cultists, the oblie and some plagues on my side vs another squad of fire warriors who didn't have enough power to take down the rest of my army, so I lost the spawns and the jugger but the game was won. What I'm saying is that against gunlines the first turns will be tough but the spawns will manage to make it, 15 wounds T5 that ignore terrain and move 12" + run with fleet is pretty good.
Another plus would be that all of those units are used on higher games. My 750 game was actually for a escalation tournament, so needed to keep those same units until 2000 pts, at 1000 pts I added a sorcerer on bike with 3-4 nurgle bikers to have another quick unit that could buff themselves and/or the juggy as they ride into combat. That and more oblies, rhinos with CSM armed with meltas/plasmas and so on.

Tough Tyrant Guard

If your going in the daemonkin of khorne codex you might want to try investing into a soulgrinder, its a ridiculous beast that does it all, for 165pts you get a super tough tank at AV13-13-11 that has 4 hull points, a 5+ invulnerable save, it has a long range very strong large blast with the phlegm bombardment AND can close combat most things to the ground with 4-5 str10 ap2 attacks per turn, to top it off it can shoot down flyers if they are arround.
Fleshhounds are also pretty boss so I could recommend going with them too
