Greeting everyone,

I am a game store employee and have finally given in to the call of wargames. I have picked up the minimum requirements for the Necron Decurion Detachment, I also have a Nightscythe and a Monolith. I am wondering if there are any hardcore Necron players that would be willing to give me any tips on what I could add to my list to be the most competitive. (Disclaimer: I am a very competitive Magic The Gathering player and have not played a game of 40K as of yet)

Necrons are pretty darn solid, I've had them for years.

First question, do you have Ghost Arks for those warriors? You're gonna want them.

I'm new here too, but a long time player, good luck!

3500 pts. - 3000 pts. - 4000 pts. - 2500 pts. - 1000 pts. - 1800 pts. - 1000 pts. - RG 1800 pts.

Everyone is going to hate on you for having an ''OP'' army. But whatever right? We play necrons to survive an entire 1850 point's worth of shooting from your opponents army at -one- of our units. And laugh it off while you march your robotic legions forth. All the while drinking in their tears and cries of ''cheese''.

Buy a canoptek spider, use any spare scarabs to make a minimum unit baby sit said spider, *important part* buy as many wraiths as you can afford and watch the slaughter ensue. (actual tactics may apply)

all joking aside, wraiths are really good... like stupid good.
I personally love praetorian's, used them in the last book, and they are great now.
tomb blades are useful for ignores cover
destroyers are even good!

try to buff your units and make use of the formation benefits. triarch stalker, crypteks, teleporting lords etc etc.

the support units like night scythes and anni barges got more expensive, but our other units are so tough now, it doesnt really matter.

good luck!

In addition to what Cheebs said, I'd also add tomb blades. Run them with gauss, shield vanes and nebuleoscops for some nice, fast objective grabbers that can also take down skimmers.

Cheebs could you explain why the Wraiths are so good?

Totally ignore terrain
strength 6 and toughness 5
3++
initiative 5 (always take the whipcoils) beatstick...

yeah, they were really good in the old book and were buffed when they should have been nerfed.

I do not understand what the 3++ means.

++ means invulnerable save.

Wraiths with whip coils are really good, for the reasons noted above.

I love C'Tans. They're expensive but they have awesome ranged weapons (a random d6 roll every turn, but they're all good and some are amazing). They're tough and hard hitting in close combat, and do even more damage when they explode upon death so there's no situation you can't turn to your advantage. Of the two elite choice versions, one has hit and run so it can always shoot as well as attack, and one regens by murdering opponents so they're both fun.

Yep... sorry, sometimes forget how it is to pick up the lingo. I've been playing necrons since the end of 5th edition, so I'm on my 3rd Codex now.
3+ is a 3 armor or cover save
3++ is a 3 invulnerable save
4+++ is either Feel No Pain or Reanimation Protocols (which act like a save, but aren't).

Thank you for the info gentlemen. I've been doing a ton of reading and it is looking like the way I'd like to play my army is the super shooty version, I might run two GhostArcs to increase my survivability.

hey sorry boss,

sometimes i forget how the terms we use can get mixed up and convoluted to newer players!

soooo wraiths, if you want a really good assault/counter assault element, ( i saw you mention shooty) these are your guys. with formation bonuses they become godlike tough. they will get their normal invuln save as well as up to a 4+ feel no pain roll if they fail any invuln saves, this equates to terminator level save, on a toughness 5 12'' moving rending platform. just super ridiculous good. im not trying to overhype them, they have rocked every game ive played.

if your going shoots style, you need to get in that 24'' sweet spot the necrons love. (most weapons they have are 24 inch range) and the cool thing is, they are tough enough to get there 99% of the time.

i love ghost arcs when I run them too, they and a big unit of warriors put out a ton of shoots, and they help the warriors survive. throw a lord in for some deep strike shenanigans and you can apply overwhelming firepower wherever you need it!

good luck!

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
