Hi guys, when playing friendly games, what type of game do you mostly play, Eternal War, Maelstrom, Custom, etc.
I'm just trying to gauge what most people do, so I can arrange a "house standard" for a bit of a long term challenge at our club.
Cheers

Usually Maelstrom but lately we've been leaning towards Eternal War in casual games since it's so much less bookkeeping and random victory point generation. It's nice to just set up and go.
I also do narrative campaigns with people and those are typically EW with some custom tweaks thrown in for story with Maelstrom on occasion for flavor.

Maelstrom is what we normally do, but Eternal War is the go-to when someone is learning a new codex or we're short on time. I'm also a fan of narrative games.
|
ATTENTION. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

I am the only IG player left in my area and other armies work better under mealstorm against my army, so I have to play that.

I don't really have a preference, I usually let my opponent decide.

I usually ask if they have a preference, otherwise we randomize maelstrom and randomize missions
however 100% of the time we ignore vanguard strike because needing surveyor equipment to figure out deployment zones is annoying.

In my FLGS we usually play Eternal War. I'm actually surprised on how popular Maelstrom seems to be.
When it firstly came out only a few of us had the objective cards, and Eternal War missions are the same missions we have always played with less random stuff.
However I'm currently playing on a Maelstrom tournament after a 40k break, seems that with the release of new codexes everyone bought their cards and now it seems like a more popular option, I guess it is a 60% Eternal 40% Maelstrom.
(I know the mission cards aren't required for playing it, but it just makes it a LOT more easier to keep track of your objectives and rolls)

To be honest we generally just do kill points, and occasionally play maelstrom, it's probably something like 90% just kill each other and 10% mission

None of my games are "friendly". I pretty much constantly have to stave off being tabled however I can.

Eternal war. less bookkeeping, more fun and easier to customize for campaigns or storylines. If we want extra objectives and "things to do" in game, we add it in ourselves to match us rather than random ones off a card. I had got the mailstrom cards thinking would be enjoyable but we as a group just scrapped them as useless.

Nooone in my regular club likes Maelstrom, so we typically just do Eternal War, and there's one of those Eternal War missions that we always skip. Sometimes, both players just agree to do Purge the Alien.
We also run alot of scenarios from old and current campaign books. Alot of the old stuff can still be used just fine in 7th with a couple modifications.
One of the funner things we do occassionally, although it adds to setup time, is to go 1 by 1 for deployment (I deploy 1 unit, you deploy 1 unit, I deploiy 1 unit, you deploy 1 unit, etc). Not sure if this is the way deployment used to happen by default in a previous edition or where this came from, but it adds something to the game IMO and is fun every once in a while.

Typically Eternal War, just because its easier, but I would love to do more Maelstrom. Plus sometimes we do some campaign or custom missions just for fun

Custom missions rule. Especially when you have a sizable skill differential between players.

Depends on my opponent and the list they bring. For casual games, I prefer Eternal War, just because it's easier. For more competitive lists, I might subtly steer them toward Malestrom. In the end, however, it's whatever mission my opponent and I can agree upon.

Must admit, the most fun games I have had went as follows:
No point limit - bring what you like as long as they make sense fluff-wise (our collections are not infinite and that's the limiting factor)
Bring a themed army for the story we've made up (siege of a city or some-such)
The game is objective based (as in, we make up our own objectives before the game and share them)
The game is completely mish-mashed and cinematic, it loosely follows a plot with us making up the story as we go along.
My favourite one was my small 2.5K force of Deathwatch (numbering 60 bodies, sternguard etc) facing down against 6K of Tyranids. The aim was for me to take out Key Tyranids, hold down a bunker until extraction and collect a specimen. Absolutely terrific fun.
Another game just involved 5K of my chaos swarming towards my friends Imperial Fists in a fortress. Again, it didn't follow the 'fair' rules of the book but it was amazingly fun.
No stress involved, lots of exciting action and events going on everywhere and actually felt like a (dare I say it) tactical battle.
