So I can't shake the fever and have decided to start an Orkz army. What's a good 500 point base for small games? I'm assuming a Nob + Boyz plus maybe a Warboss and a Trukk?

I would go for 2 decent sized mob of boyz as you said with Nobs (preferably with PK's) but if you can try to fit in a painboy for at least one of the units. It'll pay itself off in spades. Try to make them shootas too to give them that extra utility if you have the points.

Depends on what you want to get in the end. Orks can build a vast variety of viable lists. Be it footsloggers, speedfreaks or anything else. Even at 500 pt games.

If you wana go footslogging, i'd look at Warboss, 2 squads of boyz or a squad of boyz and grots supported by mek guns, probably with a kopta or two to zip around the map and take objectives. Painboss is not mandatory at such low pt games as you'll probably be better off with just more boyz.

Boss will make good use of DFK. DLS is always a great relic but for lower pt games it has a higher chance of not being that useful. Just Boss with heavy armor, PK, 2 squads of boyz - choppas or shootas containing at least 20 models is around 400-430 pt. Enough to take a few big guns and a kopta/buggy for point grabbing and a tl rokkit.

Speed freaks are really good at this point level - probably even better than footsloggas. Just get a bunch of bikers, truckboyz and even MANz!

Walker wall, albeit not as powerful at high pt games, is strong in lower pt. You can get some number of kanz and deff dreads followed up by a kff mek for 5++.

So, my suggestion is to first decide what you want to get in the end for higher pt games and than take the core out of it for lower pt games. And there's inevitably gona be higher pt games cause orks are awesome.

I kind of want a little bit of everything if that makes sense. Mostly, I just want to muck around with Orkz and throw out some WAAAGH!!!!!s. I definitely will have a Trukk or two and probably some Kanz and Koptas just for variety sake, but initially I'm looking at the Warboss, 2 big blobs of Boyz, and then building from there.

Out of curiosity, it seems like the Slugga/Choppa Boyz is the way to go for the +1 attack, is there any reason to take Shootaz instead?

Some people believe that the proper way to play a game is to form pretty gunlines and shoot at the enemy. The Orky way is to run at the opponent and hack them to death, with maybe a few slugga shots to get the blood flowing.

Shootas are useful for sitting on an objective, but for the points it takes to give your mobs shootas you can take a deffkopta or a grot squad that does the same job and lets your boys run free.

500 pts starter. Hmmm...
Warboss PK BP and whatever else you want
Painboss with Bike
2x squad of boyz however you like em.
1x minimum squad of grots for homefield objectives
Squad of stormboyz to join up with the Painboss.

Rush the Stormboyz forward and hold the enemy up with the now moderately resilient orks.
By the time they are dead your other boyz should have made it to the fight.
If you have extra points bring a Mek gun or two.

Alternatively if you use trukk boyz hide the stormboyz behind the trukks (but not too close because of explosions) and then jump out at a key unit when you reach the enemy line with their superior charge range.

This is just off the top of my head for low point competitive game.

Also on the note of shootas vs sluggas you can look at it this way. You can charge through a literal hail of fire in terms of overwatch potentially loosing more boyz for +1 attack
Or you can Shoot them once or twice. Assuming its once you get 2 shots a boy potentially softening the squad and making the hail pointed out above a little less dense at the cost of slightly less but still a metric fuqton of attacks.

It comes down to preference and playstyle. Keep in mind that every game will not just be about bludgeoning your opponent with their amputated arm. There will be objectives which will be easier to hold with shoota boyz.

I remember when I first started playing orks I had a bunch of boyz some lootas (definitely a strong consideration aside from what I said above) and a squad of 3 bikes and 10 stormboyz (both Nob PK BP). The last two units would blast forward turn one acting as suicide squads to take out enemy vehicles or heavy units. Lootas would pepper the foe from a distance trying to hit their long range fighters. And boyz would steadily move up on foot moping up the remaining mess. The whole idea with that strat was to prevent the enemy from being able to shrink my force at the beginning and then making theirs too small to effectively control anything on the board. Well I've gone on too long now but I hope this helps.
