Hello all!

I am making my way back into Heavy Gear Blitz, and as you know, Roads give movement bonuses.

As such I was wondering if anyone had some tips for making some cheap, modular roads.

I am a complete Newbie when it comes to terrain.

any help would be appreciated!

IIRC i asked about this in the past. there is the option of Sand paper which is fantasticly cheap and the grit wont fall off i dont think.

Also that neoprene style foam can be used to make roads on the cheap

I think Neoprene is a good idea. I can get a massive amount of it for fairly cheap.

And since it is black, all it requires is cutting, and some painting of lines. Thanks for the idea!

Are you near any craft stores, Vanguard-13? Places like Michaels. A.C. Moore, etc. carry 1/8" neoprene sheets sold as kids' craft foam. Most are smaller 9"x12" sheets (about a buck each), but I've also seen large rolls of black and white for sale. Between the availability of coupons and the avoidance of shipping charges, it may prove a much cheaper option for a similar, if not identical, product.

I would have to move if I did not live near any craft stores!

Yes, I am heading to Hobby Lobby today to pick up some Copic Markers as a gift to a friend. I will have to check their Neoprene stock then! Thanks for the advice oadie!

That's a good idea! As a less abrasive option, you could achieve the same thing by cutting up a vinyl gaming mat. The small size ones aren't that expensive, and you'd get pieces that big if you want them... ie wargaming sized rather than scale sized roads.

You can find two good options for roads here:http://www.ironhands.com/rwmodels.htm#road

For my urban table, I use roofing tiles that have been cut up. They were just painted black given some lines and dusted with a tan spray.

Laslty, if you want an urban table, Dropzone commander has road tiles. You can either buy them in the urban terrain box or print them up yourself. If you want them to be extra-sturdy, just buy one foot self-adhesive vinyl tiles from the hardware store and stick the road tiles to them. My buddy did this with his DZ tiles and they look great and don't shift around on the table at all.

I was going to do sandpaper, though the thought of running my Spartan across it sounds like a disaster. Need smooth sandpaper... lol

If you want the road to be sturdier, try using a 4'x8' mdf board. If you buy it at a DIY store they can usually cut it down into strip of how wide you like(I used 6"). They can be cut to lengths that you like also. Then finish them the way you like.

Hope this helps.

The thin sheets of foam (know as EVA and sold as "Funky foam" at craft stores) actually looks alot like ashpalt when drybrushed. It's the same material as the foam used for roads in the link I put above and the same material (though thinner) as is used for the bases of most miniature case trays. Easy to cut, fairly sturdy, light and no risk of scraping your models.

No smell issues?

Well, You inspire me once again Eilif! I think I will take that route. ((Pun not intended))

Roofing tile cut to length, a light tan spray, and some yellow spray paint. Seems simple, modular, and doesn't look half bad!

Glad to help I made a stencil and brushed on the yellow, but a spray would be faster. You could probably use the tiles without a basecoat if they're black, but I just got some almost-black mixed up from the hardware store and painted them. The light tan went on last. I just misted lightly it from above.

Also, the roofing tiles come with a tab that goes under the other tiles, I cut that away and tossed it out. Sheet metal snips can be bought pretty cheaply and work well to cut the roofing tiles. If you see some guys roofing a house you may be able to get some scraps or buy enough tiles for your project for a few bucks rather than buying a whole box. I was given a box by a buddy whose contractor had ordered the wrong color and left them behind.

Good Luck!
