Hi everyone

I'm sorry to ask a newb question but whats the difference between the armor save in the stat line and the armor the unit is wearing?

Like in the new windrider the stat line says the windrider has an Sv of 3+ that's armor save right? But he has mesh armor which is 5+ armor save. So what does the mesh armor do?

Eldar jetbikes are one of the exceptions, where the rider gains an armor save from the bike. For the most part it’s determined by what the model is equipped with.

There are occasions where you have redundant saves. A terminator captain with a stormshield has a 5++ from the TDA, a 4++ from his iron halo, and a 3++ from his SS. Barring something really odd, he’s just going to use the 3 up invuln all the time when his 2+ armor is not available.

Just one of the quirks of the game.

It does nothing. It's there as a formality since the unit is just guardians (who normally have 5+) on a bike.

If there was ever a rule or effect that could remove the jetbike then it would matter. But such an effect does not exist yet.

Whenever you have an overlap in saves, you take the best one.

Basically in 40k, when wounded a model gets one save. He wants to try and use the best protection available to have the best chance at not dying, right? Armor is usually the best (numerical) save a model has but it's also the most commonly broken due to armor piercing weapons. Then you have cover, which can be nearly as good or better than armor but is dependent on board position. Invulnerable saves are great because they can never be broken, but they're usually not as good as armor.

If a model has two of the same kind of save and one in better, he'll always use that one.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"
