So this issue came up the the other day in a game. We where playing using custom terrain and one of the buildings is very tall about twice as tall as a helldrake on its flying stand. In your opinion, if the base of the helldrake is about a square inch from the building's corner, and there is a unit atop the building with the closest model also about a square inch from that same corner can the hell drake's torrent weapon hit and wound that unit?
Same building, same helldrake. Can the helldrake pass over the unit on the roof and hit it with a vector strike?

Is a flying stand less than 20 inches? So range of Torrent is 12", minus 1" from building, minus 1" model-from-parapet, plus length of template (8"), can easily cover the model I'd guess (current Heldrake FAQ means you measure the range from the weapon mount), but only wound if the 'Drake has Line of Sight to it. Plus you get arguments about template placements that you would get with Blasts etc. (see recent thread about Skyshields and Blasts). Also, aren't square inches a unit of area?
As for Vector Strike - the 'Drake can absolutely move over the terrain, in the same way as a Skimmer, and Vector Strike the target.

they are. The helldrake's base was about 1 inch 'north' of the north east corner of the bulding, and 1 inch 'east' as well. Hence it was 1 square in from the corner. Same goes for the unit on the roof. Closes model was 1 inch 'south' and 1 inch 'west' of same corner.
I have no doubt the template has enough range, being a torrent weapon, to cover some or all of the models on the roof. My concern is if the unit on the roof is in the helldrake's arc and LoS

That's not something anyone here is going to be able to answer, since it relies on checking the physical positions of the actual models.
If the Helldrake was that close to a building twice its height, though, it seems unlikely that the unit would have been inside the weapon's 45 degree vertical arc.

Weird, since this is one of the only instances I think I've heard of anyone using terrain that actually meets or exceeds flight stand heights. Pretty rare people play any terrain that denies a flier los to stuff.
Tough to call, but, I'd say the Drake couldn't fire off the template, but could use Vector Strike if it moves over them, since fliers ignore terrain when they move.

The LOS issue is the same if you remove the building and put the unit on the ground right in front of the Helldrake...
