What do you think is the hardest, most badass infantry unit in the game?

I really like the look of Deathwing Knights, but lots of Grey Knight stuff looks awesome too.

Average Joe Guardsman.

He faces the same horrors the fancypants marines do, and he does it without all the advantages that marines enjoy. Best of all, when the smoke clears he doesn't even complain when aforementioned fancypants steals all the credit.

Gotsta be Plague Marines, or terminators using FW Tartaros pattern models
The former are gooey and tough at the same time, and the latter are just bad ass.

Infanty? So we are looking at 6" move models in general. For points efficincy? So we are taking out things such as termis. Not including transports I would assume? So just the infantry themselves.

My vote would go for either decurion warriors or decurion lychguard.

In term of raw power (or at least the illusion of it) I would go for Tyranid Warriors, Meganobz, Paladin, Deathwing Knights, Centurion (even if they look terrible), Incubi, lychguard or Bullgryn.

Tyranid Warriors. Particularly in the fluff - read "Warrior Brood" to get a great idea of what they can do - but on the table they're delightfully capable of most tasks. Versatile!

I gotta go with the guard. its easy to be badass when your a superman in armor, or walk around in a whole squad of guys where everyone carries a super gun. But to be a mere human with a flashlight against the universe.... thats REAL badass.

Probably because he's dead.

Marneus Calgar is referred to as "one of the Imperium's greatest tacticians" and he treats the Codex like it's the War Bible. If the Codex is garbage, then how bad is everyone else?

Scouts- not only are you clad in what is merely glorified Carapace Armor, you're expected to carry heavier weapons than the average Guardsman.

Then you're sent out to feth with the enemy via unconventional warfare, sniping and sabotage.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Then you have to give a special shout-out to Black Templars Neophytes.

Poor bastards get mixed in with the power armored Marines, meaning they're stuck in close proximity to guys that other people are directing anti-tank fire on.

Black Templars really are the dumbest Space Marines possible. And that says something given they coexist in a universe with Space Marines that ride in wolf -drawn sleds with beards and hair that preclude achieving a proper vacuum seal on their helmets.

Special snowflakes of any color aren't hardcore. The basic Imperial Infantryman is.

I'll go with what I'll have at my disposal. I can think of 2 top infantry units.

10 Meganobz because of the huge armour and nobz can customize their kit for most situations.

I concur, any troopers who's commanders tell them to "Prepare To Die!!!" before every routine patrol are as hardcore as you can get

How can regular guardsmen qualify. Ya they face the same stuff unmodified and with a weak gun. But they are also almost guaranteed to die. Not really a bad ass in my book. Brave but not bad ass.

Definitely Guardsmen. Basically WW2 troopers with more of a religious leaning, fighting aliens and demons with nothing but guts and.. well, more guts.
