I'm thinking that I'm not taking full advantage of the guaranteed turn 2 drop pod.

In the past, I put a multi-melta dreadnought and dropped it right beside the biggest tank the enemy has. It works really well against armies where there is one big piece of armor (one land raider, etc).

However, I'm starting to think that (as an Imperial Fists player) I would be better served loading in a devastator squad of nothing but heavy bolters. That way, I could put pressure on the enemy from afar from two different angles. To explain: I'd have my current devastator squad (currently two lascannons and two plasma cannons, but I'm about to switch out the plasma cannons for missile launchers so everything has 48" of range) set up behind an aegis defense line and then drop the heavy bolters in on the exact opposite end of the table so that I could basically have firepower coming to bear on the whole table.

I'm debating whether this would be another situation where the Sentinels of Terra tactics would be better, especially when they are only firing snap shots. For standard IF's, I would try to keep the enemy on the far end of the 36" range. For the Sentinels of Terra, I would drop much closer to the enemy so I could get re-rolls on the snap shots.

I need advice, assessments, improvements, recommendations. Thanks!

Do you mean turn 1 drop pod? I dont think turn 2 gurantees anything? I personally like the set up but would put a full squad onto the bolters as they would get focused fired. Allowing the standard marines to absorb the hits.

Not sure why you would, but okay...
9 Devastators, 4 Heavy Bolters, Combi-Flamer, and then a character with an Auspex. That might do what you want...

The drop pod carries only 10, so no extra character sadly. The combat squadded 10 man devs with 4 HBs could work decent if you're concerned about a blob or trying to thin out some weak infantry. SoT is a must IMO since you're podding the unit, it also allows you to take some centurions in the elites slot.

Overall though, HB devs won't be all that great. They'll be gimped as soon as they move (even TL) and still fairly lackluster against most targets. But hey, YMMV.

With SoT, bolter scouts in LSS are probably the best bang for your buck along with tank-hunting lascannon devs.
