When allocating wounds to a unit hit by a flamer template, can models that would be further away than the template can reach, be wounded?

If possible, can a rules quote and page be given, as we are having a big debate within our group.

Thanks

The template is used to determine how many hits were made. Allocating the wounds is done by the closest model to the firing unit in LoS.

Pretty straight forward. It cant wound what it cant hit

this made me remember a question - what about a torrent weapon that's placed at less than its full range? are models eligible if it could have hit them by firing further, or is the edge of the template the limit? (real world example, burna boys behind a prometium relay pipe.)

pg 35 brb, out of range, 2nd sentence "Note that, when determining if a model is out of range, always use the firing weapon's maximum range, even if it was a Rapid Fire or Salvo weapon that was shooting at half range (it can be imagined that whilst these weapons sacrificed accuracy or mobility to gain extra shots, their shots still travel their full range and have luckily hit another enemy)."

You always use the firing weapon's max range. If it has torrent you use the torrent +template as it's range from my understanding.

It's easy to assume that people arguing an interpretation you disagree with are just looking for an advantage for themselves... But it's quite often not the case.

Can wounds caused by a template weapon be allocated to models not under the template? The answer is maybe.

It all comes down to what does the range 'template' mean? There are three schools of thought on this. The 1st being that only models under the template once its in its final position are within the weapons range. The 2nd being that any models the template could have been placed over following the restrictions for template placement are within the weapons range. The third being that any model that could be under the template, regardless of placement restrictions, are within the weapons range.

I have included a picture of a model firing a template weapon at a 6 man unit. Figure A shows what models must fall under the template following the restrictions for template placement. Figure B shows an incorrect placing trying to place the closest enemy model under the template (its just a sliver but its there). The weapon will score 5 hits. Lets assume all 5 hits wounds and each enemy model only has 1 wound and no saves. If we subscribe to the 1st or 2nd schools of thought in this case models 2-6 would be each get one would allocated to them. Model 1 is spared because we can't allocate a wound to model outside the weapons range making model 2 the closest model in range. If we subscribe to the 3rd school then models 1-5 would get the wounds.

The differences between schools 1&2 would be if i was shooting at say a seven man squad and had two different ways to get 6 hits on different sub-sets of models. School 1 would mean only one subset are in range, but school 2 would mean both subsets are in range.

Torrent weapons are no different. Even though they have much more flexibility in placement.
