So this is probably a terrible/unrealtic idea but the thought sort of intrigued me. Has anyone ever seen a 40k tournament where the army lists are preset and homogenized? Assuming that each faction would have a set list that in theory would be comparable in power to each other I think this would be a blast.

Obviously it would be very difficult to set up many would be loath to build/paint new units for it but would people be interested in this? I think it would be a fun counterpoint to the current tournament meta where people bring the flavor of the day, simply relying on tactics and adaptability.

I'm not planning on hosting such a thing but i thought it could be an interesting discussion given the current concerns over game balance. Thoughts?

Wargames Con ran a mirror match event a few times. The idea was it was a single list, from a single faction. The year I played in the event it was Chaos Space Marines and you could choose 1 of 4 HQ options but all other units were identical. It was a fun event, not hyper competitive or a large draw but a cool 3 game format for sure.

The format you describe sounds interesting but it is not one I have heard of actually being used.

A 30k Tournament?

I feel it might be easier to just play low points with severe nerfs to power items that will cause trouble.

That way for the most part everyone will be putting points into troops and hq.

I've never seen this done, but if you have a good large local community I certainly think it could be cool. Without a large local player base it's going to be tough to get enough attendees who own exactly the right units, though if you set the point size at a somewhat smaller than usual size (say in the 1,000-1,500pt range), and focused on common standard units, it'd be easier.

I remember the mirror match event at WGC. That sounded cool.

As I recall there was a WHFB tournament in the Midwest (I think one of the Adepticon TOs ran it) which had one each of every army for WHFB, the TO provided the armies and they were each pre-set. That looked sweet, but obviously it's a rare club which has the resources to do that.

The 40k Draft tournament at Adepticon this year had pre-made units, which players drafted one at a time in a snake-draft like Fantasy Football. Again, the TO has an extraordinarily large collection of well-painted models, and went to the great trouble of bringing tens of thousands of points of them for the eight players to play with. Not quite the same thing, but sort of related.
