I've just finished Helsreach and was felt no attachment to really anyone in the novel. Looking back through all the books I've read over the years there's no one character that really stirred me when they died. Maybe it's because in the grim dark future there is only death, but I'd like to hear your thoughts. What 40k character were you sad to see die and why?

There will be spoilers...

Anyone who is married knows that Khorne is really a woman.

Vect, he's not really the center of any novels, but there are some where he has cameos or mentions.

He is likely one of the hardest to kill people in all the galaxy, and likely one of the most powerful(in terms of resources and mind) up there with Abaddon, the Emprah, And whoever else is the top dog of any faction.

To have a novel from the perspective of an assassin or army of assassins dispatched to go into the webway, then into Commorragh, to hunt Vect, would be astounding. A novel like this would give us a much needed look at an imperial perspective on the webway, Commorragh, and Vect(assuming they know he exists) and the horrors they would meet on the way there.

Of course, this would have to be a cliff hanger where the assassins barely meet their objective, and are unsure of his demise be it a clone as usual, or some other cliff hanger.

I was quite surprised and shocked during the Valedor novel when...
Spoiler:
Prince Yriel used the Twilight spear, or rather the Spear used him while he was unconscious/dying and stabbed his LOVER. Not because the book builds a relationship with the character. But because in this scene they reveal something about Prince Yriels sexuality, and that this man whom throughout the novel he is very fond of, which I thought was just a way they decided to make the eldar speak of best friends. Like hobbits. But it turns out Yriel is either gay, or bisexual, neither of which is a problem, I just thought it was shocking that a 40k novel would get into that potentially controversial topic.

I rather liked the entire novel though, the other character deaths never bothered me.

Spoiler:
Saul Tarvitz in Galaxy in Flames. Oddly enough, it's in his two(?) cameos in Flight of the Eisenstien - which I read prior to Galaxy in Flames - that got me to really like him and I was rooting for him all the way up until the end, wanting him to be the biggest thorn possible in Horus's side. I knew he was going to die, just kept wishing his final battle would last a few pages more. And if it had, I probably would have wanted it to last a few pages more...

That female quasi psyker officer who was left behind on that planet at the end of Legion.

The smith(?) at the end of Hammer of Daemons who is screws over the daemon of Tzeentch at the end...

And that's all I can think of right now.

Favorite first claw member was Xarl.

After that badass fight he had with the thunderhammer champion who bested the rest of first claw
I got attached to him, the donkey-cave he is. I wasnt too bad off when Uzas died. But if Spetimus had bit the dust that would have been it for me, I dont think I have continued the novel. He was the only really human character even though ADB tried to humanize others to a great degree.

Good answer,

Murill in particular got me pretty good. I really wanted Lijah Cuu to get it after that.

- - - - - -

Bequin and GODwyn Fischig biting it really got me too.

And yes, Bequin is functionally dead. Don't give a gak about Abnett's terrible sequel trilogy.

I thought I had read somewhere in the fluff, at least one of them survived and were retrieved by the Empire even though they were busted up pretty well.

Loken. Torgaddon was beheaded by little Horus and Tarvitz was just one of thousands who were killed in Horus's final bombardment of Istvaan

Not quite that simple...
Spoiler:
Torgaddon has come back both as a strange warp ghost, and as a daemon pretending to be torgaddon, which Erebus made from his geneseed, who is now the possessed leader of the Luperci.

Although unconfirmed in the book, Tarvitz is officially dead. And will remain officially dead, until an author decides to bring him back.
