Subject: Is it true that the plasma obliterator is discontinued by GW already?

This is the rumour I've heard in multiple places, apparently confirmed by GW customer support.
Now this makes NO sense. It sold out on the day of release. Any sensible company that has a head for business and wants to make as much profit as possible, would see something has sold out straight away, realise that it is a definite money maker and thus create more to match demand. That is just practical business sense.
Now I understand if something is limited edition, then keeping it limited edition drives up demand for future limited edition releases, but that comes with the proviso that you actually imform your customer base that it will be limited edition or it simply will not have the desired effect. Also limited edition usually suits things such as books better, as you can always release the standard edition as well, unlike with models.
Has GW lost the modelling cast and its blueprints for it? I joke - but why on earth would they discontinue an extremely successful release after ONE DAY? Absurd.
Unless of course these rumours aren't true. Please tell me they aren't - I really want one (or two).
Oh and lastly - why is it listed in the WD, along with promethian relay pipes as a HS and not a fortification?

You're making one fatal error here.
You're assuming that GW rules or business practices have ever made ANY sense.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"
"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"
"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"
"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!" |

If this kit was a one-off job ordered from the factory in China, list this alongside the vortex shield thingy. It''s only going to exist on ebay, and the odd GW site that charges too much.
But, it isn''t listed on the UK site any more, confirming your results.

Think about it, though. If no one knows whether or not something may be limited edition, more people will be inclined to snap it up immediately instead of waiting for some indefinite point down the line when they might lose interest in buying it. This way GW realizes a fast return on it's investment.
At least that's my thought on the matter.

Precisely. The reason half the things are limited edition and sell out immediately is to encourage that "Shut up and take my money!" impulse buy for everything. Remember GW thinks that their customers buy everything they put out, regardless of what it is, just because GW put it out. Have a few things that are limited edition and sell out and suddenly those people who might wait aren't sure if they should wait anymore if something they like is sold out and not available again outside of eBay robbery prices.
It's a brilliant, if unethical and longterm destructive, strategy. What better way to encourage your customers to buy every single thing if they aren't sure if the stuff they really want will be available? The only absolutely stupid from any point of view thing about it is that most of these things sell out on pre-order even before the regular customers know they are out there. When something sells out on pre-order in 10 minutes, somebody who has to go to their local GW shop to pick up White Dwarf is going to be SOL.

Except they sold out without anyone even knowing it was limited edition. So basically they are already selling more than they get in, even without the knee-jerk reaction. So while that technique would absolutely work, they could still print four or ten times as many models, call them limited edition and sell them all.
But GW are so oblique in their business practices that they won't even tell us what is or isn't limited edition! No, they aren't business geniuses. They are just driving a business that is so large, it doesn't really take any damage even if they ram it right into walls over and over.

Bugger! GW Australia doesn't deliver outside of Australia. It is right there and I can't get it! Arrrggghh.
Another strange thing is that they won't sell it without a different model and they won't allow more than 2 sold per order.

GW won't let shops sell outside their region. You'll have to fine a British or Euro shop.

My FLGS got the initial shipment (just two) and then two more the week after. I had one set aside for me, so I haven't really followed it.
I imagine if it is a good seller, GW will bring it back for another limited edition run.
I suspect that they don't love it enough to want to stock it permanently... though who knows.

St7 ap2 massive blast. Requires a squad inside to shoot it and has no firepoints but it does mean that it can benefit from high bs models. On a roll of one after shooting, it causes d3 wounds to the squad inside (but you get armour saves).

You missed a few neat things about it --
- The range is 72". Given its height -- mine isn't built, but it seems the barrel sits higher than the height of an IK, it can shoot over an awful lot of stuff, especially if you don't have tall terrain.
- It's a Primary Weapon, so you always roll 2 dice instead of 1 for armor penetration
- You're allowed to take items from the Buildings and Obstacles list, so a 25 point void shield for example
- It's Heavy instead of Fortification, so you can still take a fortification (in a CAD)! If you wanted to, you could even take more than 1 Plasma Obliterator.
It seems like something fun to play.

I think it being heavy support was a W2S misprint. It is supposed to be a fortification

All very good points. Worth noting that primary weapon is roll 2 and pick the highest, so not quite armourbane levels, but slightly better than tank hunter, which is great in itself.
I've heard rumours that the rules inside the box say its a fort rather than the HS it is listed as in the WD. Automatically Appended Next Post: Ivara1 wrote:There's a lot of them for sale at my local shop currently. :-D Around 46 GBP for it.
Is your shop a GW? If not, does it do overseas delivery? I may get a second one at that price!

ROBBED!!! Mine did not come with rules inside the box (or instructions). I think GW should send me another Plasma Obliterator, this time with rules in it.
