Anyone else think it sucks? Ive always used humbrol matt enamel varnish from a rattle can, but last week i accidentally picked up acryllic, and its absolute turd.. First layer worked fine, but the second spray turned my marine into a frost covered snow monster. Anyone else had these dramas? Cos right now soon as i get home its getting binned.

Last time I experienced it was about 10 years ago with a GW rattle can... I have had some frosting with a bad batch of matt vallejo varnish though.

I love Acryllic matte varnish, but I use the brush-on variety. Specifically "Winsor Newton Galleria Acrylic Matte Varnish". Never frosts, dries really quickly and even the shiniest gloss layer will flatten right out with 2 coats of it. Also, you never have to worry about spraying setup, humidity, temperature, etc and it's MUCH cheaper.

I use acrylic varnish all the time - with an airbrush, and it works great.

HOWEVER - the frosting you observed, is not due to a specific varnish - its due to the previous layer not being 100% dry.

Do a search on "frosted" varnish - it happens with dull coats,or gloss.

The frosting also happens with humidity. I still remember the look of horror as I varnished my first 3 squads of space marines (wow, that was a long time ago...). I did 1 model to make sure it worked, and it looked great! I did 29 more, and they looked great too. A few hours later, they looked all fuzzy and awful, and I wanted to puke.

I now only use airbrush varnish, but Testors Dullcote gets a lot of love here, and it's worked ok for me in the past.

Also: the matte varnishes seem to vary a lot more in the results. The glossy varnishes all pretty much look the same, from what I've seen.

yeah..im thinking it may have been due to the first layer not being fully dry..which is a pain, however, ive never had that problem with the enamel version, so i will just continue to buy that from now on.

I haven't tried enamel varnish myself to compare, maybe I'll pick up a can of that next time. I've seen videos from Humbrol where they use the fact enamel varnish can be softened by enamel thinners to create some cool effects, so it's probably not a bad tool to have in the arsenal anyway.
