Howdy. I attended a tournament a few weeks ago and as I have handed my 2 month notice in at my job, I’m going to kill some time writing up a bit of an overview report. I have not played much 6th or 7th edition 40k and haven't been a regular tournament goer since 5th ed.

First up this was a 2 day, 5 game tournament, with a heavy focus on maelstrom missions. You were allowed 2 detachments and any army the TO though was too powerful was asked to re-submit. I think there was just over 30 participants.

I took a psyker heavy, daemon summoning, deathstrike imperial guard list for a bit of fun.

The primaris psykers rolled on telekinesis most of the time trying to get dome and levitate. The inquisitor rolled divination and each went with a blob of guard. The Wyrdvanes rolled on summoning.

Game 1 – Dawn of War, Standard 3 Card Malestrom

Opponent- Orks

Big Mek, Big Nob Squad in a Battlewagon, Lootas, Burna Boys in a Trukk, Big Plasma Blast Artilery Squad, 2 Mobs of 20 Boys and a Defence Line

My opponent was fairly new to Orks, if not 40k in general and this was a quick game to begin.

Psychic powers of note were Sacrifice and Levitate.



The Veteran Squad Levitated forward to explode the battlewagon bearing down on my lines, the exposed Nobs were then hit with a Deathstrike. The wyvern took out his looters and a mob of boys, the punishers took out another. The only thing that hit my lines were the burner boys, but by that time the game was all but won.

Big Win

Game 2 – Vanguard & The mission where you pick up a card for holding objectives.

Opponent – Blood Angels

Dante, Tooled up Vanguard Squad, Tooled up Sternguard Squad in Pod, 2 x Tactical Squads in Pods, Large Assault Squad, 2 Fast Autocannon Lascannon Predators.

Bad psychic powers – no levitate no fancy summoning.

Set my guys up in the corner, bubble wrapping all my armour.

He seized the initiative...damn. His tactical squads came down in front of my line, combat squadded and did a little damage. My turn I take out quite a few tactical marines, but not all of them. Throwing caution to the wind I charged in finishing off one squad with the Terminator Inquisitor and Conscripts, but the other squad got bogged down.

Charging in like this was a mistake. It had opened up enough space for his sternguard to come in, combat squad and kill off a punisher and my wyverns. Also I hadn’t been able to get to any objectives at all, but he was ignoring them also. Dante hit my lines and it was pretty much over.

Big Loss

Game 3 – Quarter Deployment – Emperors Will

Opponent – Blood Angels

Large Jump Death Company, Librarian, 4 Las-Plas Razor Tacticals with Heavy Flamers, Hammer Terminators in a Storm Raven, Auto Las Pred and a Relic Scorpius Whirlwind!

Average psychic powers again – no levitate no fancy summoning. A couple of Domes & a Misfortune.

Standard set-up, me at the back, him as close as possible. Some large ruins gave him some great cover to advance behind.

His first turn saw the cover ignoring Scorpius destroy both my wyverns before they fired a shot. He advances, and I failed to destroy razorbacks, while summoning a couple of squads of daemonettes.

His second saw him disembarking and flaming a heap of my guys. The death company failing to wipe out the 20 man squad and sticking. My turn saw one deathstrike hit 3 razorbacks and 3 tactical squads, but a bunch of 1’s to wound saw only half destroyed. My Taurox command had outflaked behind the Scorpius and shock it. My conscripts and a much depleted deamonette squad charged the death company.

The storm raven failed to come on again with the terminators, so he ran his few free guys around attacking my line, while one squad ran back to cover his objective. The deathstrike missed the squad running back. The imperial guard finally overwhelmed the death company and cleaned up the marines in the backline, but were a long way from his objective. The taurox and squad killed the Scorpius.

The raven came in and didn’t do much. My Taurox was destroyed and the squad in it reduced to 3. Critically I forgot to run the deamonettes closing in on the objective (long day). The Raven was Misfortuned and shot down by prescienced punishers, but all the terminators surfed their shields down safely.

Unfortunatly at this point the game was called due to time. We each had our own objective and he had first blood for the win.

Minor Loss.

Game 4 – Vanguard & Deadlock

Opponent – Orks

3 Squads of Bullyboys in Trukks, 3 Large Squads of Boys in Battle wagons, Warboss in Mega Armour.

Psychic Powers – Possession, Levitate, Clensing Flame

He had stealth and infiltrate, which he used to outflank all his meganobs and warboss with boys in a battlewagon. The 2 deployed wagons came forward and parked in ruins with a 3+ which I could only get a couple of hull points through. Summoned a Keeper of Secrets, which scattered off the edge of the board and was destroyed.

His Warboss wagon and one meganobs come on right next to me. The 2 battle wagon mobs charge my conscripts who were being good bubblewrap, and destroy it (along with my hammer inquisitor and cleansing flame primaris).

My deathstrikes go off, opening up his trukk. Second deathstrike wipes out the meganob squad and opens up the bosswagon. Wyverns take out a chunk of the boss squad, and punishers take out another. My cards have been good and I am way up on points by levitating one squad over the other side of the board to pick up objectives and summoning daemons onto others. The trukk outflanks onto another objective.
The game goes on with him basically wiping out my backfield, but I am now everywhere else picking up points.

Big Win.

Game 5 – Dawn of War & Common Objective Maelstrom

Opponent – Space Wolves

Njall, Mega Walking Wolflord, 4 Drop Pods of Troops,Drop Pod full of Terminators & Arjac, 4 Terminator Lone Wolves

Psychic Powers of Note – Gate

I castle up, with my taurox and a psyker out on the other flank.



He comes down and does very little damage, with Arjac missing a punisher with his hammer. In return the punishers kill all the terminators; the wyverns take a couple of guys out of the Njall/Wolf Lord Squad. I summon some daemonettes and Gate the veterans onto an objective. The conscripts charge the Wolf Lord squad and almost get wiped, but will tie him up for his turn.

No more pods come down. A Lonewolf makes a long charge and minces the punishers with a chainfist. The Wolflord finishes off the conscripts. 2 other lone wolves attack the vet squad.

In my turn 2 a deathstrike hits the Wolf Lord and Njall, and kills them both! The Master of Ordnance blows up one of my Wyverns.

It goes tit for tat with him being one point up on my last and the final turn. I gate the veteran squad out of combat (for a second time) onto an objective in his deployment for 2 points to take the win. Great game!

Minor Win

I was very happy with 3 wins for the tournament with what I class as a fun list (even if it does have 10 warp charge). I came 8th overall.

The list was fun, though I never got a greater deamon on the board or even the plague drones I had painted up. Levitate was good when I got it, but the one game I got gate it made levitate look limp. In future an allied grey knight librarian will be getting a run I think.

I think this list has the potential to be really good, I just need to find a way to get one of those relic Scorpius tanks in, they are amazing.

I have run out of time for rambling today, hopefully this was worth the read and made sense at least most of the time.

I love your tallarn army, and I am always glad to see a good use of taurox, as I have yet to field some.

And congrats on your tourny; added bonus for playing a fun list too!
