So I know that GW offers the Death World Basing Kit... but what other ways do people base jungle/swamp based armies? I've been painting my new tyranid army purple/green, so a jungle setting is my goal. Thanks for any advice!

Jungle is hard to do both effectively and realistically.

Once you get past the mass of undergrowth at the edge, jungles are actually quite clear terrain. Lots of tree trunks, many of them quite large, but no undergrowth to speak of. That's because it's also quite DARK under the triple canopy of a real rain forest. You end up with dirt and dead leaves, and tree trunks.

And a rather dark paint scheme, because even bright colors are dulled in the deep shadow.

So you wind up compromising the reality to add undergrowth and the like, and wind up with something much more like the edges around the rain forest than the rain forest itself.

Dang. Maybe I'll just go for a grass base?

Micro Art Studio makes resin jungle bases that are pretty cool... They might be worth checking out.

Tea leaves, and roots, with the occasional green leafy thing (usually gotten from aquarium plants).

The leaves make good... leaves, like Vulcan said, jungle undergrowth is actually very brown and dead, its all just deadfall and moss.

make up some tree roots with wire and green stuff, use water effect for boggy soil, and stipple a camo green on bits for a moss effect.

The problem with resin jungle bases is that they tend to be a little too busy, and you wind up having a lot of trouble actually putting models on them without having guys magically balancing on ferns...


I prefer to sculpt my own. Basic plant shapes aren't actually that hard (mostly just variations on 'roll a sausage, flatten it out'), and it's easy to apply different effects to them to create different plants.

This lets you build the base up around the model, so it looks more like it is moving through it.







You can also buy brass-etched ferns and the like, but that tends to be an expensive option.

Some good roots and natural dirt looks dice.

then add some etched brass foliage like ivy and a few leaves works well.

Birch pods dont look right for a jungle base.
