I've got a model kit that I've had for years that I'd like to get started on. It's an old 'Battle of Hoth' set from way way back. I was looking at how they painted it on the packaging and it's well enough and it's given me ideas on how to best tackle the project. However the one thing I can't nail down is the snowy landscape.

http://www.starwars-models-images.com/esb/MPC_BATTLEOFHOTH.html

That is the kit. In the pictures on the packaging and even when this fellow did it, the snow is simply airbrushed white. MY question is...is there a way to add more depth to it, or is a simple white spray the best way to tackle this?

With a little more googling I've more or less since found some examples of what I'm looking for, but I'd still welcome advice from the dakka community!

I can't speak too much on what other elements you want to add to the base (rock outcroppings and such), but the best way that i've seen/done is Flex Paste from Woodland Scenics with a snow flock of your choice on top (personally, I prefer #08750 Powdery Snow from Noch. It has micro flakes of mica in it that gives it just enough glint and glimmer, instead of just a dry powder).

The way I do snow is by painting the area where snow is going to go white, then making a 33/33/33 mix of PVA glue, water, and snow flock, like the stuff from Woodland Scenics. This'll make a sort of thin toothpaste-like texture that I then spread over an area. I cover that area with snow then shake off the excess after a minute. Just keep in mind that snow flock is semi transparent, so you want white (or very close to it) under where you're gluing it down:
