Hey guys just played a game where my opponent bought 2 flyrants, a terv, a carnifex, and some guants to a 1K points game. I play space marines (minotuars chapter tactics) and I'm looking for advice on dealing with that. I'm not gonna post my list because it was my have fun list. What I'm looking for is advice on dealing flyrants as marines.

Sicaran tank with Battle of Sarosh will kill one. Bring a Stalker to kill the other while the Sicaran snaps at it. The new Imperial Knight Crusader would also do serious damage. I'm pretty worried about it to be honest.

Have you tried the smaller Space Marine flier (Stormtalon I think)? I think it could do well hunting tyrants and ground threat.

Talons crumple to Flyrants. And a good player will be off the table when need be, get behind the Talon and bring it down easy. I've done better with a Mortis dread than my Talon.

So a stalker is worth taking? And I'm not sure how a talon is good at taking down a flyrant.

I have run tiggy with Grav cents. It is a lot of points in 1000k games but with prescience there are still a lot of 6's. Grav is one of my biggest fears as a Nid player.

The grav will also murder his tervigon and carnifex so keep them protected best you can as they will be priority #1 for your opponent. Take a pair of tacticale squads in rhinos and maybe a storm talon as well just to have a flyer. Use the rhinos as a wall for your cents. Combat squad with flamers and missile so you can tackle the gaunts and have extra AP3.Flyrants only have 18 range so they will need to come close to your cents to shoot.

Contemptor Dreads are good with 2 Kyres Assault cannons, and a Typhoon. it does not lock you into something because you can remove its skyfire

Or the Mortis is also a half decent option.

I play BA and I use a Storm raven to take one down, not amazing at it but it works. Also I run Sternguard and try to catch them when they are still on the ground with combi grav

Do you ever go into a fight thinking "there's no point giving it my best, I'll get another chance later?"

Wow, he fields 2 flyrants in a 1000pt friendly game? I'd consider asking him to try out other units if he has them/when he can afford them.

Ignoring 2 flyrants is very ballsy. they will tear you apart

Can they tear apart 50 marines in drop pods? Because you can easily fit that into a 1000pt list.

(But a centstar is probably more effective)

12 Str 6 TL shots a turn kills about a squad a turn. then your return fir is hitting on 6's and wounding on 6's, then your trying to tar pit flyers. and the 50 marines is far less effective for more points

Does the fire raptor or ROC pattern storm eagle give you any decent options against Flyrants? I don't really know the flyrants stats, and hoping a in reserve flier can turn up and dish the damage when you need it too is risky, but, they have some decent high strength AP3 firepower, and the ROC pattern has a couple of TL lascannons.

the Bolt cannon on the Fire Raptor tears up a Flyrant hard.
and if that does not finish it you always can shoot a Missile at it and shoot other targets with the Ball turrets

The mathhammer works out to two flyrants will killing on average 6 marines a turn - enough to comfortably survive 5-6 turns of shooting. It gets pretty dicey if the game lasts till turn 7, but you'll have few enough models that the flyrants will have a harder time drawing LOS, and skeleton squads consisting of 1-2 marines getting "overkilled" works out in the favor of the marines. Obviously the marines will do only negligible damage against the flyrants, but they would be able to easily control any ground forces that the Tyranids would otherwise have. It doesn't matter if you almost get tabled... as long as you lock up the points, and you have a few survivors left by the end of the game.

Your math hammer theory is correct but like communism its great on paper but doesn't work in reality. I lost 2 1/2 squads by turn two. a full squad of assult termies, tac, and half a devistator squad.

What hit you so hard? It is almost impossible for 2 flyrant to kill 5 different squads by themselves, unless they have warp blast and you place your model tooooo close to each other. Can he also fit in something else like Mawloc / Excocrine in that 1000pts?

You also have to remember the other 500 some odd points on the table shooting at you.

there not IMPO the best flyer in the game right now because they can just be ignored.

BTW the ROC patter Storm Eagle is more of a Tank hunter.
the new C:SM Fighter from FW seems solid at killin flyrants aswell.
