What is the best load-out for the Hive Tyrant in the Leviathan SKYTYRANT SWARM formation?

Just like a the typical flyrant with x2 TL devourers w/ BLGs , or CC load out?

If CC, what? The flyrant just doesn't seem to be a dependable CC monster. But I could be misguided in that assessment.

Also, can I add additional gargoyles to the two squads in the formation, up to 30 each (not that I am actually going to do that, but it would be nice to have that option if needed)?

Is this an effective formation? I have the models to do it, and it intrigues me. But does anyone have experience using it?

Thanks in advance for any input or advice!

Also, I apologize if this subject has already been covered.

The general agreement is that it works best as a CC Tyrant, Old Aversary/ Prefered Enemy, Lash Whip/ Bone Sword or Reaper, Thorax hive , flavor to taste.

The will of the hive is always the same: HUNGER

I'll be killed for saying it, but I've found that the Ymgarl Factor really adds something to a CC Tyrant... if you can get him where he needs to be. Skytyrant offers that chance, and it's great to negate someone's AP3 attacks in a challenge, or get that exra point of Strength (with AGs you can get to S9) to put the hurt on something tough (or a tank).

Very expensive though...

I wouldn't recommend the Ymgarl since most attacks in a challenge will likely come from AP2 weapons. You want to strike first to kill any chance of someone swinging AP2 or AP3. A daemon prince is something you do not want to fight, especially with the black mace. I have found that lash whip/bonesword, Egrubs and Old Adversary are the staple. The reaper is just too pricey for what you get. If you want extra strength AG are an ok choice but at S6 already you want to pick your targets early since your gargoyle footprint will be large.

That sounds pretty strong.

Thanks as always for the sage advice.

I like Ymgarl as well, and I have the same misgivings about the cost as well.

Definitely something worth experimenting with

I'm leaning towards the staple as well, but I figured I'd run it up the flagpole and see what my fellow 40kers thought.

Still, a lot of food for thought. To me, it ends up into the YMMV category. Ymgarl and the Reaper actually seem cool, but you're right points are everything to the Nids.

Seriously, I appreciate the advice and comments given here. Dakka Dakka is a great community, and I am very happy I finally found it!

This is one of my favorite formations in 40k. It's fun and strong. I like to run my tyrant with LW/BS and AG/TS. All gargs also have AG.

I think without the AG on the gargs/tyrant, it's about 320ish, which isn't bad at all for a tyrant with basically 25+ wounds.

EDIT: I use the AG purely for fleet. As a unit that is designated for CC, I feel like it's vital to get that re-roll run and charge. Multi charge everything, blind the out of everything and then let the tyrant wreck everything. Did you get everything i'm saying about everything?

LOL, yeah, I think I get it. It can basically open a can of whoop on just about anything it comes into contact with. Except for the "blind" part. What do you mean by "blind the bleep out of everythg" Use a certain psychic power? Paroxysm? I'm new to the Nids and this edition of 40K. So that is the only part I am not clear about.

Taking everyone's advice in this thread, this is what I came up with right now.

Seems like it could do some damage, but it is 430 points for basically one unit. You think I should trim some of the biomorphs? Maybe toxin sacks and the ESG. But even then it wouldn't shave too many points, and would kind of dilute it.

I guess I'll just have to test it to see how effective the combination is.

Sounds like fun! I've got the models as well and am looking forward to giving it a try. I'll let you know how it goes!

I almost always start with a thorax hive and the maw claws. With that big a footprint any AV12+ walkers will bog the unit down otherwise, and I find smash to be less reliable than 4 s6 rending hits. From there it's really a points question. If you can afford the reaper take it. Otherwise LW/BS is still great. If fighting horde opponents switching the claws for the miasma cannon works well. Also, against low toughness shreddershard to outperform egrubs for me.

The egrubs for me also protect for a walker trying to tie me up. At least I get D3 haywire when they charge and I can hopefully smash my way out of being looked up for too many turns.
