I'm working on some 15mm scale half timber houses for WHFB themed skirmish games, but have encountered a problem. Now that I've stained the big blocky matchsticks for timber a darker color, and paper mache'd the soap boxes that will become the houses, I don't know what to paint over the newspaper with to get rid of the newsprint without getting rid of the effect it provided. I'm thinking standard wall paint will make it look even more wattle and daubish, but what would you recommend?

To be honest I am having a hard time to imagine what you are asking about. Could you please show us a photo?

Any paint will maintain the underlying texture, so long as it's applied in a thin enough layer. I'd likely just go with a few coats of diluted acrylics. If you want to change the texture, instead, use neat house paint (latex/emulsion) and stipple it on for a popcorn stucco sort of effect. A light sanding afterward will knock off the high points, leaving something that looks (at scale) like it was troweled on - perfect for daub, IMO.
