Subject: Straken or Creed?

Guardsman with Flashlight

Greetings,
As the title says, who is the better of the two on the Tabletop?
I realise it's situational to a certain extent, but "overall" I'm thinking Straken at the moment.
Thoughts?
(From searching before posting I think this has been discussed before, but I believe that was a number of years ago and before the newest codex and BRB.....I think)
Thanks

Yarikk.
But of those two, it depends on the rest of your army. Straken would have been cool if he was an IC that could join the squad. But he's a part of a small bunch of t3 guyz. He might be interesting for a footslogging aggressive platoon but inquisition does it better and WAY cheaper.
Creed is fine for gunlines. He allows to reroll orders - means, you can now more reliably order HWT, conscripts with priests and even your reular guardsmen and vets. Too bad IG gunlines are not good enough.

Fluff wise, I agree. Straken all the way for the Jungle Fighters. Guy killed a land shark and wears its skull as a manbag.
I am fairly new to guard, recently amassed a nice collection that has given me a number of options of how to play it.
I mainly cobbled together the collection for the painting/modelling opportunites, and then realised I would actually like to play them and have the chance to win more than once .
I've got both the options, Straken and Creed to play with my army (also a standard CC for lower point games). But around the 1500-1850 mark, I was interested in hearing peoples views on who would be the most effective.
Appreciate it again depends on what list I run. Like i said i have a number of options. I cant justify spending more $£€€£$ on GW so I'm a bit stuck with what I have, i.e. i cant buy any more to mix in.
I'm thinking to play a mainly gunline army (shock horror i know). ADL with command chimera, basilisk (x2), manticore, heavy weapons and veterans behind (camo everywhere possible). Bullgryns backfield with the tanks. Ratlings placed elsewhere and Valkyrie with naked/melta Vets in reserve to drop where needed. (I have 4 LBTs, 4 Executioners and a Baneblade that I could also add in to play more offensively if and when). That's where I stumble on who to pick, Creed or Straken. Creed is expensive, but brings a more order and tactical based slant on it. Whereas Straken makes my gunline not totally sucky at CC, he's not useless in cc himself and is still a senior officer, but more expensive. Typing this I think for the majority of games I'll run a normal company commander, but in games where I want to use Creed or Straken, who to pick?

I use Creed for the fluff, and it compliments my infantry heavy gunline well. But for the points, its better to run a second CCS, which is 60pts (20 less than Creed). At the end of the day, the only reason to run creed is to buff your orders. But with two company command squads you get to spread out your orders and you get 4. So run Creed if you are using your second HQ slot to run a tank company.
Straken idk. Never fielded for fluff reasons

Personally, I'd recommend either Yarrick or Pask.
But between Straken and Creed, definitely Creed.
If you have a really good shooty setup, Creed has alot of nifty tricks. And I would recommend taking sergeant Kell whenever you can to buddy up with Creed. The pair, especially for the points, are a solid choice for a mechanized infantry unit, (Vets, heavy weapons, chimeras/leman russes)

Creed is at least not actively bad. Just overcosted. The orders abilities he has are actually somewhat useful if you take a bunch of forgeworld artillery to use them on. This is a place the rerolls on failed orders is worthwhile. The best part about him though is his 2 warlord traits. In a CAD rolling both of those on strategic and you have a 50% chance to get master of ambush. The strategic warlord traits are so good that you will benefit quite a bit from getting two of them. Just make sure you take a couple of conscript or blobb squads with priests to take advantage of them.
Straken is actively baiting you to charge into melee with a T3 unit with a 5+ armour save on most of the unit...wow. Even worse he is baiting you to make him warlord and give your opponent a victory point. That is just cruel. He is pretty good in melee until you compare his to characters like kharn or khorne heralds and realize they are IC so can go into better units and have assault transports...ugh. Cool model and fluff though.

Straken has one of the most useful Warlord Traits, giving his unit Relentless.
MoO that can ride in a Chimera and fire on the move. Check. Lascannon that can move and fire. Check. Double Tap some Plasma, with Ignores Cover order, and then charge? Check.
Not much left alive after that, so you can probably charge the two or three guys that are left and actually wipe them out. At the time of his release, he was one of VERY FEW non- MC / Walkers that could strike with AP2 at initiative. That's shifting, but it was a big thing at the time.
If you use infantry to screen your tanks, like I've started doing, they have Counter Charge... which is hypothetically useful, since you can double / triple tap Lasguns and still get a bonus CC attack? Why not, sounds better than a poke in the eye. Actually good if you have a Priest leading some CC upgraded blob, which I wouldn't. But hey, it could happen.
Creed gives you sweet feth all for the points you pay. An extra Warlord trait is worth roughly 15 points, according to the Blood Angels codex. Maybe a bit more because it could be on any table. From there, you get auto-voxes for any orders that Creed Gives [Let's ballpark at a 25 point value] and then you get an extra order... 10 points? He might be worth 50 points.
Straken gives you something you can't get any other way. He's a ton of points, but all his benefits are guaranteed. Guaranteed Trait to build off of. Guaranteed buffs to nearby squads. He can still issue orders. You get a wealth of gear and stat boosts when you take him. He's just pretty damned good.
If you wanted to run a Traitor Guard unit, lead by an Chaos Marine Lord, with "Daemon Weapon", he'd make a pretty good stand in, while allowing access as "Battle Bros" to a Knight or some such. Straken's just got more to bring to the table. Creed is an overpriced "upgrade".

Oh yes, forgot to add in that you should ALWAYS have some advisors tagging along as well. (MoO OoF Astropath). Yeah tactical genius isn't unique to Creed anymore, but 2 warlord traits, all the rerolls, and 3 sets of orders. And after typing this, I realize he probably makes the whole advisors/battle staff CCS work most efficiently. Creed is still not someone I use and bothered modelling yet, but he is not overpriced. I have to reiterate at least the relatively huge 'potential' that 2 warlord traits can yield should the dice gods favor you.

Creed for 2 warlords, orders, best in a gun line and then if your taking Creed you might aswell take Colour Sargent Kell for that LD10. Fluff wise though Straken is a complete badass.
