Hey guys, hoping you can help me out.

1. Pre heresy, I'm aware that none but the Emperors Children could wear the aquila, but were other legions allowed to have it displayed on banners. etc?
2. On an unrelated, trivia rather then interest, does anyone know why the Dark Angels use the war cry 'For the Lion'? I've read some of the other books, and can't recall any of the other legions using their primarchs name as a war cry. Of course, they could just be my memory failing.

Cheers guys.

I'm not sure about point 1, but in regards to the Dark Angels battlecry, the Blood Angels frequently use (and used back then) Sanguinius in some of their battle cries. e.g. "For the Emperor and Sanguinius!"

1. Not technically true. The Emperor's Children could wear the Palatine Aquila, the Great Crusade-era heraldry of the Emperor, which is not the same as the Imperial Aquila that is seen on pretty much everything and became the key symbol for loyalists during the Heresy.

2. Plenty of others used their primarch in their battle cry. The Blood Angels and the White Scars being the first that come to mind. Of course the legions could have hundreds of war cries depending on context.

1. Depends how far his aquila has become the icon of the IoM. Symbols change / evolve.
2. you sure? IIRC there are a lot of names and titles used.... the 16th Legio used 'lupercal' ...

As jareddm said, the EC were the only legion permitted to wear the Paletine Aquila, which was the Emperors personal symbol, but all legions were allowed to use the regular Aquila. It just wasn't festooned on every single empty place like it is in 40k.

They were indeed the only one to wear THE aquila, not the general aquila you see nowadays.

I think they call him the Lion because his name is Lion'el Johnson ;P Also i believe he slew a monster that was Lionish for all to see. Much like Hercules took down the numean Lion.

Others do call primarchs nicknames on the field. Just not as much

I have seen some word bearers yell For Lord Aurelian!
Luna Wolves. For Horus, For the Warmaster! Although that is more of a title like the Emperor

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Actualy, im sure about the Lionish creature slaying.

The Dark Angels (Pre Imperium) had some ritual. There used to be lots of giant creatures on Caliban that threathened humanity.

During one of these quests The Lion killed one of the very rare and very dangerous lionish creatures. An almost impossible task.

That probably has something to do with it

Lion El'Jonson means "Lion, Son of the Forest".

He was named that when he was first discovered because of the way he fought the Knights of the Order who found him.

What exactly was the difference between the Palatine Aquila and the regular Aquila?

Cheers guys.

Indeed, what is the difference between the agile, and the palatine aquila?

And thanks for the war cry help, thought I was going mad.

Cheers.

Different meanings.

The old Palatine Aquila shows mankind learning from its past and looking into the future. Because you can't see the future the right head is blind. But is more armoured.

The new Aquila symbolises the union of the Imperium of Man and the Adeptus Mechanicus.

I believe this is the Paletine Aquila (maybe without the Lightning). Looks like the one on the FW EC chest plates for example, and different to the one you see on all the 40k models (subtly). It's never really made very clear as far as I can tell, other than the EC wear the Paletine Aquila and no one else can wear that one.

Edit: on FW the EC transfer sheet shows this one, but without the Lightning, so I'm guessing that's it. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/The_Horus_Heresy/Legiones_Astartes/Emperors_Children/EMPERORS_CHILDREN_LEGION_TRANSFER_SHEET.html

Note the much higher wingspan, tucked in claws, double open eyes, and lack of a tail.
