I use a method alternating between cellulose and acrylic thinners. Grab a bottle of cellulose thinner from Wilkos (about £2), but some on a rag and wipe it over the model (would work great on the flat panels of Tau vehicles). The paint should start coming off, but I give it another go over with Revell Color Mix thinners, as it appears to rinse it off. For hard to reach areas use the same process but apply the stuff with an old paintbrush, an give it a good scrub with an old toothbrush.
I've heard modellers say you should never use thinners on plastic, but I've had nothing but success with it. I would recommend however, you test on an old figure beforehand though.

In the UK, the most recommended are Dettol and Fairy Powder Spray(?). Safe for plastics.

I tried nail polish remover. Two Space Marines literally melted. Unfortunately I didn't keep them, they would've been great in some gory diorama... nowadays I use 95 % ethanol (C2H5OH), works perfectly but can dissolve some types of glue (eg GW's thin glue).

Sounds like you used nail polish remover with acetone in it. It will melt any plastics. Acetone free nail polish remover won't melt plastic. I use it all the time.

Sounds likely. I took whatever was in my wife's cupboard As always, try it on something cheap first. Like a painted piece of sprue.
