I have been playing a few games of Lion Rampant now and I would like to get a new retinue for it. I am interested in a russian/polish/Baltic or scandanavian force, but I do not know what that force would look like. I would really appreciate advice about what type to get, cavalry, spears, archers or whatever makeup it would be and also what companies make eastern Europe style medievals. Thank you so much for help!

You might want to better define what you mean by "medieval," since there is a HUGE difference between Eastern Europe c.500, Eastern Europe c.1000 and Eastern Europe c.1300.

Battle of Grunwald (1410) Poles? Probably get plenty of use out of Perry plastic 100 Years War/Wars of the Roses miniatures.

I run a Hussite force for Lion Rampant. Not a million miles away from eastern European Medieval.

Fireforge Games makes some great plastic infantry and cavalry. They would make excellent Sword Brothers or Teutonic Knights.

Their Mongols could be used to make Tartars or members of the Golden Horde that invaded Eastern Europe.

Also check out Old Glory 25s, their Medieval and Late Medieval ranges have a lot of stuff.

Black Tree Designs also does a range of fairly generic mid-late medieval.

Russian and Polish armies would be cavalry heavy. The Russians had their own boyars and then had Tartars and Cumans that served under/with them. Teutonic Knights and Sword Brothers would be small knights, native cavalry, and crossbows.

I think the time I am most interested in would be 1100-1300 or so. But any information is very helpful to me. It is a time and place I am interested in but know little about. Thank you very much!

Peter Darman does a reasonable historical fiction series on the early crusades in the Baltic.

Also see books about the Teutonic Knights. They were heavily involved in crusades across Eastern Europe. In addition to the knights you will pick up information on Polish, Estonian, Lithuanian, Russian, and Tartar forces. Michael Urban has a relatively good and impartial book on the Knights and their foes.

Eastern Europe changed incredibly between 1100 and 1300.

For one, the typical sword went from being curved to straight and then back again.

And there was that whole Mongol thing.

The Rus were very distinctive from the Europeans during the 12th to 14th centuries, but during the 14th century, began to adopt more Qestern Styled armor and weapons.

I know, miniatures wise, that Museum Miniatures makes an AWESOME line of 15mm Rus (Eastern Europeans).

But if you are talking Poles, then they tended to be closer in appearance to Prussians and Germans/Teutonics.

This is the book you need.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Armies-Middle-Ages-Volume-1300-1500/dp/B001C3WBAQ

It is a bit pricey but the WRG "Armies and Enemies" books are still the standard references for campaign history, force composition and model design for all the Ancient and Mediaeval periods.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Ian's book only covers the 1300 out of the OP's suggested range of 1100 - 1300.

A better choice might be Osprey's Hungary and the Fall of Eastern Europe:

It does touch upon the Poles and the Rus.

Is the company Molniya still in business? The site is still up, but not updated since 2011, so I am doubtful, but does anyone know? Www.molniyafigs.com

The New Miss Macross!

Deep Frier of Mount Doom

This game/setting is obviously Renaissance and not medieval but you may be able to use either the rules or some minis designed for it.

For a Polish style force from the early 1400s, such as the battle of grunwald, would the perry line of war of the roses plastics fit? Or would that be to much later to look right? I am talking about the light cavalry, men at arms, foot knights and mercenaries boxes all labeled 1450-1500. Would the English army 1415-1429 box be a better match?
