So I get that 9th is about to drop, and all this might be invalid fairly soon, BUT...

I'm an older player who is considering rebooting/repurchasing Ogre Kingdoms (I played them when they were originally released). Trying to get the lay of the land about what is considered by the community to be good and what is considered worthwhile options and what's not?

1) What are the most commonly used units? What units are considered to be duds?

2) Monsters? Are there any that are really good or really aweful?

3) What does a typical "competetive" OK army look like?

1) Common units I've seen consist of Ironguts and Leadbelchers.. Most competitive lists also commonly use them.

2) Mournfang Cavalry are monstrous cavalry and are pretty good. Also, they can be seen in competitive lists most of the time.

3) 1 + 2, usually with some sort of deathstar that hides characters in the second rank. Also, the cats are good chaaf/warmachine hunters and ironblasters can be pretty devastating.

EDIT: If you're worried about 9th edition, just start out with the basics. Some Ironguts, some leadbelchers, a kitty and a character or two should be enough to start with.

Quite frankly I would be more concerned with whether or not to put them on round or square bases.

I am one of the few people I know who is actually excited for the option of playing WHFB on round bases. I think Ogres would look great on them! I'm really hoping that round bases are something that takes hold.

Anyhow, I will probably hold off until I see what the situation is. But I do want to make some plans though, so thanks for the info!

FYI - Leadbelchers are good now? Back in their original incarnation, they were considered tricky at best and sub-par at worst. What changed?

Fake Englandland

Leadbeltchers are great, because they no longer fire every other turn. Plus, all of the shots they can put out. Ogres are awesome, at least when I've played against them. They're a ton of fun against, they seem reasonably competitive, and they have a lot of character with a lot of models, like the female maneater. They're also cheaper to get into then most armies, and that's always a plus.

1) Out of stuff I've seen, Ironguts, Bulls, Leadbeltchers, individual Sabertusks to disrupt and hunt wamachines. I see 1-2 taken just to annoy warmachines and get in the way. Stuff I've seen that are duds are the yeti looking dudes. They're flamable, and have magic weapons, but they aren't worth it. Hunters aren't great, they have the weird issue of being half decent characters, but they can't join any units except the Sabertusks, for some stupid reason. The only other 'duds' are really the named characters for the most part, but that's pretty common at this point. Though, I know Goldfang Maneater can be really fun, because if I remember right, you roll for how many points he can spend on magic items and such before you start the game. More fun then great though.

2) As far as monsters, I see Mournfangs brought, as well as the Ironblasters. The other ones seem to fall under the category of "Too many points for what they do."

3) Usually a Gutstar with a Slaughtermaster (Level 4 mage) possibly another mage, sometimes BSB, Ironblasters seem common, but not 100% sure of them.

Shadowrun is the best game ever. It's the only thing I have ever played in which I have jumped out of a shot out van with a chainsaw to cut a flying drone in half before leveling a building with ANFO assisted by a troll, a dwarf, an elf, and a wizard.

The bad stuff in the current book is as follows,

Yhetees, Hunters, Giants, and all the special characters except Scragg(who is just barely playable)

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
