So as a new Tyranid player I am wondering what the consenus is on Termagaunt weapons. It looks like Termagaunts have 4 weapons: Fleshborers, Spinefists, Spike Rifles, and Devourers. It also looks like for free, Termagaunts can take Fleshborers, Spinefists, or Spike Rifles, while Devourers double the model's cost. I've heard Spike Rifles are terrible, so it seems to be between Fleshborers, Spinefists, and Devourers. I am planning on having a Tervigon, which I know spawns Fleshborer Termagaunts only, but I also have to have a unit of 30 Termagaunts to have the Tervigon as a Troop choice. So my question to you all is what is the best way to run Termagaunts? I feel like the Spinefists are great for overwatch and you get more hits with them due to TL, as well as being good against Infantry. Fleshborers look like you can glance the rear armor of a light vehicle, but it seems rare that I will have line of sight of the rear armor. Devourers seem great with S4, added range, and being Assault 3, but the cost concerns me on a bunch of expendable units. However, it looks like you can mix the weapons a unit has. Any thoughts?

There are two traditional choices. All fleshborers or a 1:2 ratio of fleshborers to Devourers. So if you have 30 bodies, ten are Devilgaunts. Cheap ones to die, Devs to stay in the back, use that increased range and more shots.

That summarizes it nicely. Some people like spine fists for TL, but at s3 they're underwhelming.

Depends on what you're shooting at really. Spinefists and Fleshborers are surprisingly well balanced against one another!

I like to run full broods of 30 and the mix can swing between 10 Fleshborers/20 Devourers to 20 Fleshborers/10 Devourers depending on points.

I like to run the Endless Swarm formation as well, and in that case Devourers really pay for themselves with the extra range.

Common squads:

10 fleshborers or spinefists
20 Devourers in a Tyrannocyte.
10 spinefist, 10 Devourers walking
10 Fleshborers 20 Devourers outflanking
30 Fleshborers as a Tervigon tax.

Spinefists are better in overwatch, and mainly lose out against T7 and AV10. If you walk, you usually aren't going to get a shot at T7 (artillery) or AV 10. But if you deep strike or outflank you can often get a shot at them.

Yeah the math was done way back and vs most any target it is a wash.... I use Spinefists because I like the look.

I normally run "Devilgaunts" (Termagants with Devourers) 1:2 with vanillas/Spinegaunts, For example I run Spinegaunts x20, if I add a Tervigon, I often add +10 Devilgaunts to make Tervigon a Troop.
